Listen to “City of Stars”, the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Duet from ‘La La Land’

But what will Lionsgate push for the film’s Best Song nomination?

I’ve seen La La Land twice, and the wait for the film’s soundtrack isn’t getting any easier. There’s not a bad song in the bunch (even John Legend’s “Start A Fire”, which is meant to represent selling out jazz for pop sensibilities, is fun to listen to), and it will be interesting to see what songs Lionsgate wants to promote in what’s looking like an incredibly competitive category this year.

The studio announced that the soundtrack will be available to own on December 9th, and they’ve released the first single, “City of Stars”, which features leads Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It’s a good first track to promote because it doesn’t depend as heavily on the show-stopping choreography you get from the opening number “Another Day of Sun” or the cute chemistry you see in “A Lovely Night”.

However, I’m not sure “City of Stars” is the film’s best bet to earn a Best Song win. La La Land is currently the frontrunner for Best Picture, so it’s almost guaranteed a Best Song nomination, but when it comes to beating out songs from Moana, Sing Street, or Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Trolls, it’s got a tough battle. Personally, I think “Another Day of Sun” or “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” are the film’s best bet to pick up a Best Song Oscar, but we’ll have to see how the race shakes out.
