Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) has signed on to direct Di Novi Pictures' adaptation of the 2006 Philip Reeve children's novel Larklight.  Set in a Vict0rian-era alternate universe where vast space travel is possible, the book centers on "a brother and sister who team with a band of renegade space pirates to save the world from destruction at the hands of a madman."  According to Heat Vision, Steve Knight (Eastern Promises) will pen the script.

This will be Alfredson's second English-language feature following the far-reaching cultural impact of his 2008 film Let the Right One In.  First up is the espionage thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Harris, Ciaran Hinds, and Mark Strong.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis of Larklight.

Art Mumby and his rather irritating sister, Myrtle, live with their father in a huge and rambling house called Larklight, travelling through the aether on a remote orbit far beyond the Moon. One ordinary sort of morning they receive a letter announcing that a Mr Webster wishes to call upon them. Visitors to Larklight are rare, if not unique, and a frenzy of preparation ensues. But it is entirely the wrong sort of preparation, as the Mumbys discover when their guest arrives, and a Dreadful and Terrifying adventure begins. It takes them to the farthest reaches of space, where they must battle the evil First Ones in a desperate bid to save each other – and the known Universe. [Larklight.com]
