For a guy who’s made only five films in almost 40 years, director Terrence Malick is becoming incredibly prolific as of late. Last year he released the long-awaited The Tree of Life, he’s still in post-production on an untitled romantic starring Ben Affleck that he shot in 2010, and he recently committed to shooting two movies this year: Knight of Cups and Lawless. We know next to nothing about both films except for the cast, but today an official logline for the latter has been unveiled that gives us some insight into what Malick has planned for stars Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, and Christian Bale. Hit the jump to see what’s in store for Lawless.

Christian Bale and Terrence Malick Austin City LimitsMalick was spotted filming Bale at last year’s Austin City Limits music festival, as well as Gosling and Mara at Austin’s Fun Fun Fest. Fans were insanely curious as to why Malick was dwelling in the Austin music scene, but the Lawless logline courtesy of FilmNation (via The Playlist) clears things up a bit:

“Two intersecting love triangles. It is a story of sexual obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.”

It was later confirmed that Malick was actually doing pre-production work last fall at ACL and Fun Fun Fest, so none of that footage is expected to be in the finished film. Mara recently revealed that Lawless doesn’t shoot until this September (Busy bee Malick will shoot King of Cups this summer), so one assumes that he may return to Austin City Limits this year to shoot the actual footage after getting a feel for the fest last year.

Malick is nothing if not ambitious, and I really can’t wait to see all these films he’s got cooking. I’m sincerely hoping that he’s nearly done with the romantic drama, possibly giving us a chance to see the film this year (rumors abound that it may or may not premiere at Cannes in May). The cast for Lawless and King of Cups is incredible, with Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman set to star in both films. I can’t help but wonder if there may be some thematic or character overlap between the two films. Time will tell.

  1. stupid? really? that’s the best word you could come up with to describe it? get a vocabulary….if you didnt like the movie that’s one thing, but it wasn’t “stupid”

    • Stupid is actually a pretty good word to describe it. A movie without a plot is stupid. A movie with no structure is stupid. The movie was stupid.

    • LOL!
BTW, is Malick linked to scientology? Wouldn’t surprise me.
People just don’t get it, it’s like in the story of “The Emperors new Clothes” Most people are afraid to say that the movie was pretentious BS.

      • Or many of its fans are willing to admit its a non-narrative film so issues of plotting are really irrelevant. And you clearly know absolutely nothing about Scientology. This film is clearly rooted in Christian Spirituality of which Malick was a student in. So bringing Scientology into this just shows your own ignorance.

As per Lawless it seems decently interesting, I am interested to see how modern indie gets the Malick treatment.
