Jonah Hex was a massive flop, and maybe it was always doomed. Westerns are a tough sell, and when you try to make them weird, studios get nervous, the meddling begins, and ultimately everyone tries to distance themselves from the final product before it implodes. But the character of Jonah Hex—a disfigured but honorable gunslinger—isn’t a bad one, and if someone does him right, people could really root for the character.

That second chance is coming along in the form of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. “Ever since we decided that ‘Legends’ would involve time travel, we were eager to do a story set in the Old West,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim told Variety. “But if you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply MUST include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well known, beloved DC character to television.”
