‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Will Bring in Jonah Hex Later This Season

Jonah Hex was a massive flop, and maybe it was always doomed. Westerns are a tough sell, and when you try to make them weird, studios get nervous, the meddling begins, and ultimately everyone tries to distance themselves from the final product before it implodes. But the character of Jonah Hex—a disfigured but honorable gunslinger—isn’t a bad one, and if someone does him right, people could really root for the character.

That second chance is coming along in the form of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. “Ever since we decided that ‘Legends’ would involve time travel, we were eager to do a story set in the Old West,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim told Variety. “But if you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply MUST include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well known, beloved DC character to television.”

While Legends already has a deep ensemble cast where they’ll be trying to further eight characters—White Canary, The Atom, Firestorm (who’s made up of two people), Captain Cold, Heatwave, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl—I’m glad that they’re finding room for other DC characters as well.

They’re currently trying to cast the role, and I can’t help but wonder if Thomas Jane will  throw his hat in the ring. He’s a big fan of the character, and even put himself a in makeup test to show he was the right man for the screen adaptation, but they chose to go with Josh Brolin instead (Jane later said he dodged a bullet). However, Jane went on to voice the character in the 2010 animated short film, so perhaps he’s still interested.

There’s still a little time to make a decision. The character won’t debut until the 11th episode of the season, and it’s possible it will be a recurring role.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premieres Thursday, January 21st on The CW, and stars Brandon Routh, Wentworth Miller, Caity Lotz, Victor Garber, Arthur Darvill, Ciara Renée, Franz Drameh, Dominic Purcell, and Falk Hentschel.
