With that ambitious release date list, clearly Warner Bros. and DC Films are doing everything they can to keep up with Marvel’s success. Right now Guardians of the Galaxy is sitting pretty in the #1 spot at the box office, both for the weekend and for the year overall, so it makes sense that DC would want a space-set superhero team of their own.
There’s a rumor floating around claiming that Warner Bros. is busy sending out the Legion of Super-Heroes comics to screenwriters so that they can come up with ideas for a big screen rendition. Hit the jump for more on the possible Legion of Super-Heroes film.
Latino Review is reporting that the studio is quietly approaching writers and their reps, but has little information beyond that including whether or not Legion of Super-Heroes could snag one of those nine release dates.
The comic was created by Otto Binder and Al Pastino back in 1958. The story takes place in the 30th and 31st centuries and features an intergalactic team of young superheroes including Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl. Cosmic Boy has magnetic capabilities that allow him to manipulate, repel and attract objects, Lightning Lad can generate electricity and then discharge it via lightning bolts and Saturn Girl is a powerful telepath. But of course, those are only the original members and, throughout the years, the group has included dozens of different heroes, many of whom could be in consideration for the film.
But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, nothing is confirmed and even if this rumor is the real deal, it seems as though Warner Bros. and DC are very early in the process. As someone who knows little to nothing about the source material, I am intrigued by the idea of having a younger crop of heroes, but at this point, how many superhero movies are in this stage of the development process? It’s getting more and more challenging to wrap my ahead around one and really appreciate its potential when there are so many others to consider.
