A movie based on LEGOs probably shouldn't have worked in the first place, so you'd imagine that a sequel to a movie based on LEGOs wouldn't stand a chance. And yet here we are, it's 2019, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are miracle workers, and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is an unadulterated delight. The film picks up five years after The LEGO Movie and everything is decidedly not awesome in Bricksburg. LEGO DUPLO from the great beyond have invaded—led by Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi (Tiffany Haddish) and her incredibly named henchman General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz)—and Emmet (Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks), Batman (Will Arnett), Metalbeard (Nick Offerman), Benny (Charlie Day), and Unikitty (Alison Brie) will have to travel to the furthest reaches of the house galaxy to stop it. Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum direct from a script by Lord and Miller.

Before The LEGO Movie 2 hit theaters, I sat down with Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum to talk about the film. We also discussed the process of taking ownership of the franchise from original directors Lord and Miller, the hardest part of the story to crack, and their favorite Easter Eggs and cameos (including the mysterious Wanderer...)

Check out what they had to say in the player above. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is now in theaters.

Here is the official synopsis for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part:

The much-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed, global box office phenomenon that started it all, “The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part,” reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city. It’s been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.

The battle to defeat them and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet, Lucy, Batman and their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds, including a strange galaxy where everything is a musical. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are.
