Len Wiseman to Direct THE MUMMY Reboot for a Possible 2014 Release

     September 24, 2012

Things are moving rather quickly on Universal’s reboot of The Mummy.  It was announced back in May that Star Trek screenwriters/prolific producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be developing reboots of both The Mummy and Van Helsing, with Tom Cruise attached to star in the latter.  In subsequent interviews Kurtzman hinted at approaching the reboots with a darker tone than their original counterparts, and sure enough, Underworld and Total Recall director Len Wiseman is now being lined up to take the helm of The Mummy.

Hit the jump for more, including Wiseman’s thoughts on the monster redo.

Len-Wiseman-the-mummyThe script for the Mummy reboot is being written by Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, and Wiseman tells Deadline that he connected with the project’s darker take:

“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.”

Wiseman already has a professional relationship with Kurtzman and Orci as he helmed the pilot for their Hawaii Five-0 TV series reboot and he’s also set to direct the pilot for their Sleepy Hollow TV adaptation, so the move makes sense.  Kurtman notes that they’re reaching into the roots of The Mummy with this reboot, and he adds that the original film  “at its beating heart is a horror movie and then an action movie.”  In other words, expect quite a few action sequences.

When the reboot was first announced, I was hoping Kurtzman and Orci would take the project in a strong adventure direction.  In a landscape full of “dark and gritty” tentpoles, it would’ve been nice to see a cheeky yet grounded 1930s adventure monster movie.  But alas, that’s not really Wiseman’s forte so it appears we’re in for a rather gritty take on The Mummy.

Universal is eager to get this thing going so they’re aiming for a 2014 release date, which would mean production would have to begin sometime next year.  Much is still unknown about the project, so hopefully we hear some promising news soon.

“In a landscape full of “dark and gritty” tentpoles, it would’ve been nice to see a cheeky yet grounded 1930s adventure monster movie.”

So you want them to basically remake the movies with Brendan Fraser?

  • Duder

just don’t remove the adventure aspect of the film- one of the reasons the movie was a successful reboot IMO.

    Hollywood is about to implode…

Reboot the Mummy by just making ‘The Further Adventures of Rick O’Connell’ where he takes on a different Universal monster in a series of different movies…

Please, stop letting this hack make movies. Why do they keep giving guys like this franchises to pump out C level movies? Spoiler Alert: this movie will suck.

I just came from a meeting at Universal. If I had seen this first I would have set fire to myself outside their offices in protest.

Please, someone make it stop, please PLU_HEASEEEE…. There are more writers in Hollywood than Orci, Kurtzman and Lindeloff. and Len WISEMAN??? after Die Hard/ total recall? can’t someone find real writers and directors?

I’m going home to beat my head against the wall until I lobotomize myself and don’t have to hear about such utter crap any more.

Just another minion to do Hollywoods bidding.

That top picture of Wiseman looks like someone is holding a gun to him on the set of Total Recall. *maybe it’s just wishful thinking* “STOP DIRECTING. NOW!!!”

  • CamdenHey

Way to go from bad to worse……..

I remember seeing an interview with Jessica Biel where she compared the rebooted Total Recall to Nolan’s Batman. I laughed so hard. But in all seriousness I don’t have high hopes for this reboot but the first Underworld wasn’t terrible. The first Mummy had a certain charm but we all know what happened to Stephen Sommers after that. Cough…Van Helsing…cough…GI Joe. So who knows.

Len Wiseman ? the man who F***ed Total Recall ? They have a good sense of humor in hollywood.

Dude, what is up with this whole “DARKER” trend? Everything now has to be DARKER DARKER DARKER, I’ve heard and read the word so many times in articles about reboots, remakes and sequels that I’m getting really pissed off about it. It looks like every action/adventure between 2013-2015 is gonna be so dark we won’t even be able to see what’s on screen. Making something DARKER doesn’t make it any better. The 1999 Mummy was fairly good: it had the right mix of DARKNESS, comedy, horror, and action. We need more movies like THAT! Not some DARKER re-imagining of such movies. Please, Hollywood, you’re being very emo with this Darker thing.

And yet, like the Total Recal remake, some dumb fool will pay money to watch this film and justify making this movie.

Thank you! How can movie execs, (owners or what not doleing out the mony to make a movie) look at Weisman and say,”Wow!..did yousee the new Total Recall movie? Total Mediocraty! Great!! I have 100 million dollars to give to a director to makenext movie! Oh, how about we give the job to Les Weisman!? I mean, Live Free or Die Hard, what a boring, unrealistic, platic looking movie that does not understand the Character John MClane, and his authentic sounding dialogue and don’t fuck with me attitude; completely pointless. same goes for Total Recall, POINTLESS!! So, lets give him millions to make movie…blah!!!!!!” good idea!! I literally could not wait for that movie to end, painful. Not pulling from Arnold Movie?!? What was with the 3-boob chick than?? I mean that was just pointless and felt like it was added as a wink to original. And why does every shot and location in the movies look all done on set. LiveFRee Die Hard. The whole outdoor sequence with FBI and Capital building blowing not up, just watch it; it all looks contrived, fake and atually like a set! Outdoors!!!!! Looks like a shitty set.
