Les Miserables is easily in my top three most-anticipated films of the year.  I love the musical, and the film adaptation has a terrific cast featuring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Helena Bonham Carter.  Today, twelve new images and four new set photos from the film have gone online.  The images give us the first look at Barks as Eponine (Barks previously played the role on stage), and Seyfried as the adult Cossette, the ward of parole-jumper-turned-respectable-businessman Jean Valjean (Jackman).  We also get some new looks at Javert (Crowe), Fantine (Hathaway), and Marius (Redmayne).  However, we have to keep waiting for a glimpse of Cohen and Carter as the Thénardiers since we haven’t seen them in set photos and videos either.

Hit the jump to check out the images and set photos.  Les Miserables opens December 14th. [Update: We've updated the article with high-resolution versions of the images and the film's first poster]

Here’s the official synopsis for Les Miserables:

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

  1. I’m still not sure what to think about this adaptation. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan of the musical, but I’m worried that Tom Hooper is really just a hack director (his direction in King’s Speech was TV movie quality IMO) and he can’t handle something on the scale of this. I’m hoping to be proven wrong though.

    • Probably the result of a corset. Samantha Barks is slim, but not THAT tiny. Not in the regular pics I’ve seen of her.

  2. Great voices in this cast! Visually, I think of Valjean as being a larger, heftier man, but I know Jackman will rock the roll!
