We were all left a little bit broken after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but hear’s hoping Dane DeHaan can leave that superhero blunder in the dust. The actor returns to the screen with his long-awaited portrayal of legendary actor James Dean opposite Robert Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock. The pair are the focus of Life, the official U.S. trailer for which has landed online via Apple Trailers.

While DeHaan’s performance is a big draw, the film about his relationship to Dennis. The real Dennis was a renown photographer, but he’s mostly known for his portraits of Dean; the black-and-white photo he took of the actor in Manhattan’s Times Square became an iconic image. The two were brought together for an assignment from Life magazine, and it’s this publication from which the film takes its name.

Here’s the film’s official plot synopsis:

Dennis Stock was only 26 when he was commissioned to photograph James Dean, Hollywood’s rebellious free spirit on the verge of superstardom, for LIFE Magazine in 1955. In the months leading up to the premiere of Dean’s infamous role in East of Eden and filming Rebel Without a Cause, Stock and Dean took a photographic journey across the United States, from Los Angeles to New York and finally to Dean’s childhood farmhouse in Indiana. And while Stock thought he was capturing a young actor in the instant before he became a household name, in fact he documented the last moments of intimacy and simplicity that James Dean ever knew.

Life made its debut at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and slowly trickled down through screenings in Europe, in addition to the film festival circuit. Anton Corbijn (The American) directs the film from a screenplay by Luke Davies (Reclaim). The cast is rounded out by Ben Kingsley, Joel Edgerton, Peter Lucas, and Lauren Gallagher.

Life is scheduled for a U.S. release on December 4th.
