Two new featurettes for director Ang Lee’s ambitious adaptation of Life of Pi have been released.  Lee has stated many times that this is the hardest film he’s ever had to make, and it’s obvious that’s not an understatement when you realize that the premise involves a young boy and a tiger lost at sea for the majority of the film.  The featurettes released today focus on the meticulousness that went into creating the CG tiger Richard Parker, and choosing to shoot the film in 3D.  The latter featurette includes 3D guru James Cameron talking about Lee’s use of 3D in the pic and how it enhances the story, naturally.

Hit the jump to take a look at the featurettes.  Life of Pi opens in 3D on November 21st.

Here’s the synopsis for Life of Pi:

Director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) creates a groundbreaking movie event about a young man who survives a tragic disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While marooned on a lifeboat, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship’s only other survivor — a fearsome Bengal tiger.

    • It’s obvious from the PG rating that the studio wants to push this as a family movie, but after reading the book, I had a difficult time imagining it as a story for all ages. The book gets pretty graphic and dark in places and the existential themes aren’t exactly for a broad audience. Sounds like the movie jettisoned a lot that would have made it PG-13 (the book itself would be an R for violence alone). Still, it looks beautiful. It will be interesting to see what “families” think of it.

      • I will see it alone before I’ll take my family to see it with me then.
We must be cautious ( with Ben Kenobi voice)
