The first trailer for Ang Lee‘s adaptation of Life of Pi has gone online. The film looks, in a word, vibrant. The few still images we’ve seen looked pretty, but this will definitely be a visually amazing feature when it opens this November. As for the story, the trailer doesn’t lay out the plot and instead sells the message of hope, discovery, and courage. There’s not a single line of dialogue in the trailer, and it’s a smart decision letting the visuals and tone do the talking. I’m still not entirely sure what to expect from Life of Pi, but I like what I’m seeing from this trailer.

The book synopsis:
The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes.
The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them “the truth.” After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional–but is it more true? What is up with these glut of religious movies !? Hasn’t religion done enough damage to humanity to even be looked at as a “good” thing ?
(1) I can’t profess to know the original story (I’ve never read the book), but I don’t understand where, from the trailer, you’re getting the impression that this is a “religious movie.”
(2) Religion is nothing but a.) humane allegory, and b.) binding law (it’s there in the etymology). That it hasn’t kept up with innovations in science and human development seems to be its defining feature, but just because it is wholly inadequate (and yes, aggressive and destructive, apart from being a reactionary drag) in certain times and places, doesn’t mean it has been, from a historical and civilizing standpoint, always-damaging. Learn yourself something, beotch!

The 3D scene that previewed in front of Prometheus of the fish flying over and on their boat looked very exciting visually and this trailer adds to that. Although I would like to see and hear, I guess, more dialogue.
