While a series is already being set up at NBC following Hugh Dancy as FBI agent William Graham and his dealings with notorious cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter, it sounds like another Silence of the Lambs inspired series is also in the works on another network. Apparently Lifetime is developing a new series called Clarice, which would follow the FBI agent that Jodie Foster brought to life in the Best Picture winning film back in 1991, and Julianne Moore inherited in the 2001 sequel Hannibal. More details after the jump.

TV Guide says the new series would “follow the exploits of a young Clarice Starling soon after she graduates from the FBI academy.” And considering the film has already chronicled her work with Dr. Lecter, this series likely wouldn’t use the iconic character played by Anthony Hopkins in the series, which makes it a little less appealing than the NBC series. Plus, there’s the issue that Lifetime isn’t really known for crafting the best material for TV. Of course, there’s plenty of places to take the character that haven’t been explored on the big screen, and there’s a chance a compelling crime drama could be crafted around the character. Following The Client List with Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Lifetime does seem more dedicated to original series with singular female leads, but using Clarice Starling from one of the best thrillers of all-time just might be shooting for the moon. Stay tuned.

  1. You know, as far as dumb Hollywood ideas go, this one is not that dumb. Clarice Starling is an interesting enough character in an interesting enough job that she could carry her own series, especially on Lifetime.

The NBC show with Lecter and Graham, on the other hand, is going to have to live up to impossibly high expectations on a weekly basis, and if they don’t get the cop/Lecter interaction exactly right they’ll be devoured (with a glass of chianti) by fans and critics alike.

  2. Lifetime doesn’t have the track record required to attract the heavyweight actress this role demands. Jodie Foster. Gillian Anderson. Mireille Enos. Clarice is renowned for her wits, not her tits.
