Some of the best horror movies prey on out most basic and primal fears. We humans don’t see very well in the dark, of course, which means that even the most innocuous experiences at nocturne can be tinged with a feeling of unease. Lights Out, produced by creepy pasta maestro James Wan, uses those fears to frightening effect. Director David Sandberg adapts his own 2013 short film of the same name, which focuses on a woman who is haunted by a thing in the darkness of her home — a thing which only reveals itself when the lights are off. So basically, you’ll never sleep with the lights off again after this, if you sleep at all.

The new trailer reveals a few new spooky scenes, and a few new looks at Diana, the thing under the bed (so to speak). “Everyone is afraid of the dark, and that’s what she feeds on,” we’re told. Great.

At the WonderCon panel for the movie,

[Star] Maria Bello described her terrified reaction to seeing the movie the first time a couple days ago. “I watched the movie between my fingers” she admitted, “I knew what was going to happen and I was still scared.” On what drew her to working with a first time filmmaker, Bello stated that it was the drama that drew her in. “For a horror film, it’s such a drama – a family drama. Bello described her character Sophie as “a schizophrenic suffering mental delusions. It was hard to play someone who loves their children but at the same time is tormented by her own demons.”

Check out the new trailer below; Lights Out premieres Friday, July 22nd, and also stars Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Batemen and Charlotta Losten.
