Producer Lindsey Collins Talks JOHN CARTER, Deleted Scenes, and an R-Rated GALAXY QUEST?!

     March 9, 2012

As I said in the intro to my interview with John Carter producer Jim Morris, while it’s always great to talk with actors, if you want to hear why certain key decisions were made, you’ve got to talk with the filmmakers.  After all, while an actor might have a great behind the scenes story (like my interview with Taylor Kitsch), the producer can tell you what deleted scenes will be on the eventual Blu-ray, and what the filmmakers learned from showing the film to the Pixar brain trust.   But without a doubt, the best part of talking with a producer is the stuff that comes up that you weren’t expecting.  Like hearing about an R-rated cut of Galaxy Quest!   If anyone at the studio is reading this, fans would love to see this cut.  Think about a special edition home video release.  Please!

Anyway, the other week, Disney held a big press junket in Arizona, and I landed an exclusive video interview with John Carter producer Lindsey Collins.  During our extended conversation we talked about how the movie doesn’t talk down to the audience, how they showed the film to the Pixar brain trust and what they learned, deleted scenes, her favorite movie, actor and director, and like I already said, she talked about how Sigourney Weaver told her about the original version of Galaxy Quest.  Hit the jump to watch.

galaxy_quest_movie_imageAnd for those who are like me and cannot believe the original cut of Galaxy Quest was rated R, here’s exactly what Collins said:

“We had lunch with Sigourney [Weaver] who was telling us that there actually used to be an R-rated version of that movie which was awesome. It was the director’s cut and it was R-rated and everybody was swearing and there were sex scenes, and the whole thing. They didn’t know what to do with it, so they had to re-edit the whole thing and made it what it is today. We were like, ‘How do we get our hands on the R-rated version of Galaxy Quest?’ She said ‘I don’t know!’ and we were like, ‘Come on, Sigourney!’ ”

Again, I have to see this version of the movie.

john-carter-Taylor KitschAs usual, I’ve time indexed the interview so you can watch the parts that interest you.  For more on John Carter, here’s my video interview with Dominic West, Andrew Stanton, Taylor Kitsch, producer Jim Morris, a ten minute clip, the latest trailer, clips, featurettes, 13 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the film, and 95 images.  Or you can click here for all of our coverage.

Wow, I must say Lindsey Collins is beautiful.

She sure is – the Collins’ genetic code which includes cinematic skill as well as looks, is apparently worldwide i.e. Lynn & Lily too.

Oh, please?!?! Galaxy Quest is a classic! Only thing that could be better is an R-rated version!

Im not suprised about the R rated Cut of Galaxy Quest because if you rewatch the film there are obvious edits and dub-overs. For example two scenes i can recall are the te beginning dressing when they are waiting for Tim Allens Character to show up and the black guy clearly says ” Your so full of Shit” but they dub it over with your so full of it man and it just sounds of and doesn’t sinc with the video and u cleary see his mouth make an s sound. Another example is the scene where justin long is guding sigourney weaver aand tim allen through the ship to find the the macguffin and when sigourney sees the steel pounders obstscle they have to go through she clearly says in plain view ” Fuck This ” but they dub it over with ”Forget This’. I always found this interesting and awkward and now i know why, cool lol

Awesome interview. Lindsay looks and sounds to be a really fun next door type person. I was going to watch the movie anyway but her interview made me appriciate it more coz it looks like it is made by “real” humans not some hollywood suits. Thank you

Note this r-rated cut is likely due to one or two scenes. One of which was Weaver’s character trying to seduce two aliens one of whom is interested the other disgusted.

It’s why one scene she has her uniform zipped up the next she is showing cleavage.

It would just take that scene and some cussing plus the violence in the mentioned sex scene where she uses a door to squish the two aliens is all the MPAA would need to give it a R rating. Sexual content always gets harsher treatment then violence.

What a great interview and what a great gal! Love her humor, her energy and hearing all those little tidbits about John Carter (my favorite film of the year). They did a great job getting it to the perfect balance of great, intricate store, characters with depth, and visuals that blow the mind! Can’t wait to go see it again tomorrow!! :D
