Saturday Night Live is endlessly fascinating. The show is an American institution that’s been on the air for 40 years, and the fact that each episode is created from scratch in the span of a week, and then broadcast live to the entire country is kind of amazing. It’s uneven, imperfect, and oftentimes disappointing, but you don’t watch SNL for consistency. You watch SNL to see some of the best comedy performers around trying things that are out there, things that are too ambitious, and sometimes things that are dangerous in the hopes that something magical happens.

Which is why the new documentary Live from New York! promises to be an interesting look behind the scenes of one of the most iconic pieces of television ever produced—and it’s still going. The first trailer for director Bao Nguyen’s film is now online, and whereas James Franco’s excellent Saturday Night offers an intimate glimpse at how each show is created, Live from New York! looks to delve more into the show’s history and past.
