As we’ve seen in previous X-Men films, the continuity of this superhero franchise is one of the more problematic cinematic spaces. Caliban is the latest example: actor Tómas Lemarquis portrayed the pale-skinned mutant in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, but Stephen Merchant has been rumored for the role in the third Wolverine movie, titled Logan. Now the casting seems confirmed with the first photos of the comedian in character.

Merchant shared a photo of his X-Men character on Instagram to show fans “how I spent my summer.” The black-and-white image sees him in white body paint with a cowboy hat, a bandana wrapped around his face, and a feral glare. Logan director James Mangold released a second, more close-up shot of the character on Twitter, writing about the photo being shot with a “Leica S 007 Summicron 100mm, ISO 1600 1/250 ƒ2.”

Caliban is an albino mutant who was first recruited by Callisto, leader of the Morlocks, in the comics. His ability to track other mutants proved useful, and the Logan version of the character certainly has the cowboy tracker look down pat. Caliban’s inclusion in X-Men: Apocalypse was a fun nod to his comic book storyline: he became a servant of En Sabah Nur, who brainwashed the mutant, transformed him into a hulking monstrosity with abnormal strength, and named him one of his Four Horsemen.

We’re slowly but surely learning more and more about the plot of Logan, which seems to be inspired by the Old Man Logan story arc from the comics. We’ve seen Boyd Holbrook as the villainous leader of The Reavers, while previous images teased a desolate, Western setting, and a cryptic message that seems to reflect the current state of mutant affairs: “Where are all the mutants?”

Patrick Stewart (reprising his role of Professor Charles Xavier), Richard E. Grant, and Elizabeth Rodriguez help round out the cast of this R-rated film. Logan is scheduled for release on March 3, 2017.
