Last week, we got a look at Boyd Holbrook as Pierce in James Mangold’s Wolverine sequel Logan. In the comics, Pierce has two notable storylines. The first deals with him as a mutant-hating genocidal maniac who infiltrated the Hellfire Club with the sole intention of murdering all of its members. The second is in the Age of Apocalypse run where Pierce served as the leader of a band of human assassins known as the Reavers.
Today, the official Logan Instagram page released the following image, which gives us our answer on who the villains will be:
In the comics, the Reavers were a gang of cyborg villains, and in the Age of Apocalypse storyline, the were a band of human traitors serving Apocalypse. Team members included Lady Deathstrike, Bonebreaker, Skullbuster, and Pretty Boy. We don’t know if any of these characters will appear in Logan, and it’s possible that Pierce is the only name villain running around, and that the Reavers are a nameless group of assassins bent on making Logan’s life miserable.
The question is whether or not Mangold will keep them as cyborgs like they were in the comics, or if they’re just a mercenary force. On the one hand, you need antagonists who can keep up with Wolverine, but on the other hand, Mangold has said that the Wolverine featured in Logan is one who’s losing his powers.
Hopefully, we’ll get a trailer and a plot synopsis soon that will help make clear where Logan sits in the new X-Men universe conjured up following the time-shifting events of Days of Future Past. Based on what we’ve seen so far, it looks like Mangold has taken full advantage of a new timeline and stripped away the comforts of the superhero genre to make a hard-as-nails western.
Logan also stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, and Elizabeth Rodriguez. The film opens March 3, 2017.
