When The Lord of the Rings was released on Blu-ray last year, many fans were upset that only the theatrical versions were hitting Blu-ray and not the extended editions.  I didn’t have a problem with the release since I love the theatrical versions and wanted to see them in high definition (unfortunately, the transfers were only mediocre and Peter Jackson said he wasn’t involved with the Blu-ray).

But now those unhappy fans can be sated as Warner Bros. has announced The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Limited Extended Edition + Digital Copy) on Blu-ray.  Like the theatrical Blu-ray, the Limited Extended Edition will come with digital copies.  Also like the theatrical Blu-ray, it looks like all of the special features have been ported over from the DVD with no new additions.  There’s no word if Peter Jackson oversaw this transfer, but seeing as he’s been busy with The Hobbit, I doubt it.  Click here to pre-order The Lord of the Rings: Limited Extended Edition , which is due out in 2011 or 2012 according to Amazon (most likely late this year).  Hit the jump for a full list of the special features.

One scene needs altering before I even think about buying this… The scene in fellowship, where Bilbo finds the ring in the flashback, as that scene is from The HOBBIT and the actor will be different. They need to re film that scene and swap it for Ian Holm.

Also some of the FX and compositing look ropey now, weird considering Star Wars OT still looks fresh in comparison.

Ha! Nice one – I like it. And damn true too! Let’s leave the LOTR trilogy as perfect as it always has been please.

Can’t wait for these. Although I wasn’t annoyed at the early theatrical releases because of transfer quality, but because they though they could exploit fans by encouraging them to purchase it twice or be forced to wait. I still think that’s really harsh, but hey, now the Extendeds are finally here I’ll be first in line to snap them up.

Actually, he has a point. I love LOTR but on dvd they do look terrible now. Bluray I believe will emphasize the green screen problems. Mainly in Fellowship at the beginning. The Star Wars films have held up very well, yet the LOTR look dated already, as does the Star Wars prequels. Maybe cgi outdates quicker than models.

Also, I agree that that scene in Fellowship needs reshooting, only for the sake of continuity with the Hobbit. How can it follow on smoothly if the same shot is in two films but with different actors?
