As a way to build awareness for the upcoming Blu-ray release for the Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions, Warner Bros. will be theatrically releasing the extended editions in to AMC Theaters this June.  TheOneRing reports that The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition will open June 14th, The Two Towers: Extended Edition will open June 21st, and The Return of the King: Extended Edition will hit on June 28th, the same day that Blu-ray trilogy of the extended editions hits stores.  Now the real question is whether or not these films will feature intermissions or if the hardcore LOTR fans will happily sit through a four-hour feature.  I’m betting on the latter.

Hit the jump for a list of special features included on the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: Limited Extended Edition Blu-ray.  The 15-disc set has an SRP of $119.98.

I’m guessing there will be intermissions. If AMC is smart, they’ll give people a bathroom break and a chance to grab a popcorn refill. And remember, the extended DVD was spread across two discs, as is the upcoming blu-ray release – they should just have the intermission in the theater at the same point.

    • Gandy

NO intermissions! There shouldnt even be credits, they should just start the next movie seamlessly like it is one 12 hour long glorious movie. If you were a true fan you would sneak in some waybread and wear Depends….

  • jessica

i’d pay to see that with no intermissions, too bad theres no amc theathers within like 175 miles of where i am..

  • J.R.

Ohhh Lucas! Cameron!! what have you done!!

  • Ryan

an AMC near me played the extendeds of the first 2 the week ROTK opened. No intermission. I’d go see Fellowship maybe. I’ve seen each flick almost 20 times cause of my dad dragging me back every other weekend. I’m a bit burned out still.

  • J.R.

What so to see one movie you have to flip…. sorry change discs???

    • morfeo

Is there any good reason to split one movie on 2 dual layer BD 50 GB discs?
I can’t see any other then to piss people off… :/ I was waiting for this release like forever, but with that move they pretty successfully discourage me from buying it.

      • J.R.

I would like to buy this box because of the special features, i am not a LotR crazy fan, but those movie are great just don’t fill cool about changing discs after 1:30 of the movie thats just plain wrong, probably will get the best Video transfer since Avatar but i would prefer to wait until another tech (100gb disc) comes to experience that, now i am confused! what to buy?

        1. Don’t care that much about the extended cuts.
        2. Care a lot for the Special Features.

    • morfeo

Don’t know for sure but I think read somewhere that theres not that much more bonus content compared to the older DVD releases, so if that’s true and you have the DVD set than I guess you’ll be fine.

As for the movie needing more discspace to keep the bitrate high – it just isn’t so. The April 2010 BD release of Avatar was supposed to be ultra high-bitrate one, with no bonus content on the disc – only the movie in it’s best render. But when the collector’s edition came out, with the movie (3 cuts via seamless branching) and a lot of bonus content on one disc, it turned out that the bitrate isn’t that much lower compared to the previous release, and the image quality is *exactly* the same. So no, that just doens’t cut it for me :(
They could easily stack the movie on one disc and put this “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – The Untold Story Trailer” on the other and it would be fine! I can’t understand why they did what they did.

Thank you Collider for making this day awesome. And I’d prefer the films without intermissions.
