Earlier today, we heard that Ryan Gosling's directorial debut would be premiering at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.  Previously titled How to Catch a Monster, we now have the first image from the re-titled film, Lost River.  The new name for the film apparently derives from its setting, a once idyllic town that's now descending into a place of despair and dragging the families that live there down with it.  In addition to the first creepy look at the film, we've got some new info on the plot from star Iain De Caestecker, who you might know from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Lost River also stars Saoirse Ronan, Christina HendricksBen MendohlsonMatt Smith, Barbara Steele.  Hit the jump to check out the first Lost River image, and for more on the picture.

Yeah, so that's Hendricks in the above image, and she seems to be in some sort of trouble to say the least.  Here's what De Caestecker had to say about the David Lynch-esque picture and Gosling's directorial style (via Empire):

Ryan [Gosling] works in a very free way, he’s constantly in an artistic frame of mind ... All I can really say is that it centers around a family. There’s my character, Bones, his mother and his younger brother. There’s also a girl next door played by Saoirse Ronan, called Rat ... It’s about this family living in a town called Lost River, which is perhaps a place that was once full of family and happiness and love, and is now this town that’s slowly descending into a place without any hope. This family is holding onto the foundations of their house and everything they think they need to hold onto.”
