Roadside Attractions has released a Love & Mercy teaser trailer online.  The film focuses on the genius and madness of the Beach Boys' Brian WilsonPaul Dano plays the younger Wilson whose genius cemented the Beach Boys as one of the greatest American bands of all-time even though his mental illness began to consume him.  John Cusack plays the older Wilson, who is an over-medicated shell of his former self, but tries to find salvation in the love of the caring, determined Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks).

I saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and thought it was great.  Director Bill Pohlad doesn't turn the biopic into a hagiography, and he gives a full picture of Wilson by exploring his life from two different time periods with two different actors.  He also doesn't go with music biopic clichés and makes Wilson's skills as a producer feel real rather than coincidental.  Finally, Cusack is excellent to the point of being infuriating because you can see that when he wants to invest in a role, he can do something special.

Watch the trailer below, and click here for Adam's review from TIFF.  Love & Mercy opens June 5th, and also stars Paul Giamatti.

Here's the official synopsis:

LOVE & MERCY presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys. Set against the era defining catalog of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost.
