Universal Pictures has released the first Lucy trailer.  Director Luc Besson‘s (The Fifth Element) upcoming action thriller stars Scarlett Johansson as a reluctant drug mule who is transformed into an incredible fighter capable of clairvoyance, telekinesis, and an ability to disregard pain and emotion when one of the designer drugs enters her system.  The flick looks fun and interesting.  I like that she gets her powers from a bag of blue goo leaking into her stomach, and when she those gets powers she starts to lose her emotions.  It’s a neat premise, and the action looks good.  Also, the Morgan Freeman narration reminds me of this scene from South Park.

Hit the jump to watch the Lucy trailer and to check out some new images.  The film also stars Analeigh Tipton.  Lucy opens in theaters August 8th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Lucy:

From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

  • Micky Nozawa

    Looks pretty damn good…

  • Steven

Wow that looked way better than what I thought it would.

It kinda looks like that movie Limitless but miles better.

  • Jan

Scarlett’s hot and everything, but was also surprised to see Min-sik Choi (the original Oldboy) in what appears to be his Hollywood debut. Hope he can elevate what appears to be a standard gangster-role…

  • oburi

5th element and elfen lied without a clear antagonist. bound to suck.

  • Bob

Looks amazing. Hope this is Luc at his best, not his worst. Scarjo has been on a role lately. Avengers, Her, Cap, Under the Skin and now this.

    • Gary Collins

What’s Luc at his worst, oh right Leon.

*Psst. See what I did there?*

Interesting sci fi aspect, like her ability to see all flow of information, via frequencies. Looking good as always JoJo, I’m down!

  • wil9000

This could be interesting, although it does use the old, long, long, LONG debunked trope that we only use 10% of our brains.

  • Walt

Scarlett’s acting looks horrible in this. Also, plot stolen directly from Kyle XY. Don’t believe me? Go take a look at it on youtube or netflix.

    • Bona

I hate to say that you are spot-on correct buddy! He just developed the thing into a more modern version, this time with a woman.

    • Chris

Scarlett’s acting ALWAYS looks horrible. Trailer looks stupid too.

    Director of Leon…
    Star of Oldboy being villainous…
    Morgan Freeman being Morgan Freeman…
Scarlet Johansson kicking ass and taking names and looking hot…?
    COUNT ME IN.

    • Grendal Sven

All four of the reasons I ticked off in my brain while watching the trailer that is going to make me go see it!

    • Gary Collins

Wow, Director of Leon- the ultimate pedo movie ever.
Star of Spike Lee’s Lousy remake
Morgan Freeman in another Morgan Freeman Role
Scarlet Johansson kicking ass, I could be watching Avengers or Iron Man 2.

Ooopsie. I guess you didn’t watch the trailer… either that or you haven’t seen *either* Oldboy flick, cuz… that’s the star of the original Oldboy, not the Spike Lee remake.

I can appreciate wanting to wade right in on the comments though, that ScarJo can suuure get your head swimming…

      • Gary Collins

No I didn’t notice him, I’m still reeling from that horrible remake.

      • Will

        Yoouuuu… have anger issues.

  • Drake

I think they actually lifted that “access 100% of your brain” line directly from the Limitless script.

Movie itself looks preposterous … kinda surprised the actors agreed to this. Then again, $$$.

    • Grendal Sven

Sad thing is, you only use 10% of your brain “at a time.”

We actually do use 100% our entire brain.

      • Yacob Rosenblumenthalovitch

        Thou art correct.

Good lord.Yes please ASAP. I missed ya Luc,and can’t get enough of miss Scarlett,it’s a win win.

  • habb

maybe after leon and 5th element, a good movie from Luc Besson

    • Gary Collins

Wait, leon is a good movie? Seriously, the one with the pedo overtones too it.

      • Will

Sorry, not picking on you or anything, but that’s the second time with the pedo stuff. I think you need to look deep inside on that one. It’s not Lolita or anything; it’s really a portrait of innocence. Leon reluctantly rescues the girl, becoming in his eyes her protector and father figure. To her, a pubescent girl flooded with hormones who just lost her entire family, his protection and strength leads her to see him as a love interest. She expresses this many times; each time, it hurts him because he can see what’s happening, and what he desparately needs is for her to remain his child and he pretends to have not heard. This complex relationship resolves itself in her final scenes with him, when she finally sees herself as he saw her, and feels the beauty in his innocence against her attempts.

As to it being a good movie, it is widely considered a modern classic. This of course does not mean that it is a good movie, but I believe that yes, it is.

      • Gary Collins

Nah, it’s based on Luc Besson’s tyrst with a 14 year old girl. It’s a pedo movie. There’s nothing to it. I don’t care if it’s a modern classic, so’s fucking Blue Lagoon and that’s a pedo movie too. I think it’s not a good movie at all. It’s disgusting and sick, but if you like watching that shit, find do so. So fucking Kids, the child porn movie of the century from Mr. I got a way with it child molestor Larry Clark. They should have seized that movie and locked that bastard up. And please, she’s basically flat out telling Leon repeatedly during the movie she wants to sleep with him and it’s creepy and not cute or complex. It’s kind of like Blame it on Rio creepy. It’s unexplained and gross, the way she’s dressed up too, ecccch, ewww, god I need a shower. You’re the same people that defend Larry Clark and let Roman Polanski date rape 13 year olds. I rest my case. You’ll defend Woody Allen too, even though he’s pretty much a creep too.

      • Will

Wow, you *are* an angry, angry person.

While I understand that you may have personal reasons for feeling the way that you do, there’s no sense looking for things where there are none – therein lies a path to misery where there are many more sides of the world set against a person than are actually present. I would hope that you don’t actually believe upon reflection that there are so many broken people in the world that the majority would set against you in their views on pedophilia.

You were clearly upset by the girl’s attraction to the protagonist, but I assure you that a younger person’s infatuation with an older person is not pedophilic, but rather if things were reversed, or certainly if the older person were to reciprocate any advances. Neither of these things take place. It is Leon, the killer, who is innocent and turns the other direction in order to save the girl from herself, not wanting to either have any part in her fantasy, or to cause any shame in her for her natural feelings. This isn’t to say that the situation isn’t crafted to make us feel uncomfortable – indeed it is, inevitably we feel this as Leon feels it himself – however I do believe that he deals with it in perhaps the best way imaginable, and in the process offers her a view of the world where a man can protect without needing anything in return.

As to my feelings towards Larry Clark, Roman Polanski, or Woody Allen – I do find the crimes which they are accused of to be deplorable, and though I wish justice to be visited upon any who would harm another, I also find that not being personally acquainted with the facts of their situations I must remain agnostic in my judgement of them.

  • Grendal Sven

Holy shit, she used the Conqueror’s Haki on them!

How is the 10% brain myth still around, it’s 2014 people! A person couldn’t even function if they only used 10% of their brain. How am I supposed to take a film seriously if the film’s premise is based on a complete and utter bullshit myth that anyone with 5 seconds and a computer could debunk. JESUS PEOPLE, A LITTLE EFFORT NEXT TIME

Crank 2 was hilarious. It is a film you shouldn’t take seriously and then carry on watching with that in mind.

It like Gamer is something that made me want to vomit, especially the shooting of a stripper’s fake breasts.
