MacGruber only made $9.3 million at the worldwide box office, but there have been rumors about a sequel circulating ever since director Jorma Taccone revealed that he was working on one. However, right after that, Will Forte said, “I don’t think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it.”

Even though Forte wound up delivering a more formal response later, admitting that a script was in the works but that there was no guarantee they’d get the money to make it happen, my thoughts were more in line with his first statement. MacGruber 2 was fun to think about, but could and should it really ever happen? Forte continued to tease the possibility of a second film over the years, but now he sounds more serious about it than ever.

Here’s what Forte just told The Wrap about MacGruber 2:

“It seems like we have a realistic shot at getting [‘MacGruber 2′] made. We have a loose outline of the first couple of acts, which we’re really excited about. So we’ve just got to flesh it out a little more.”

However, Forte also added the following:

“If [‘The Last Man on Earth’] were to ever be successful enough to get a second season, we’d probably have to wait until after that season to make it. If the show isn’t successful enough to do that, we’d probably jump in right away.”

Forte also noted that there’s a good chance the entire cast will return, a claim that’s easy to corroborate considering Wiig told us that’s she in and Ryan Phillippe said he’s going to do it as well.

Forte’s optimism and the fact that the key cast members are coming back is a good sign for the project, but, as Forte clearly noted, it’ll come down to The Last Man on Earth. The show kicks off on Sunday, March 1st on Fox and Allison dubbed it some “damn fine television,” so if it’s a hit, MacGruber 2’s fate could go back to being very uncertain.

This probably goes without saying, but there’s another MacGruber 2 report making the rounds via Hollywood Life this evening claiming that the film isn't just in the works, it's already in post-production. Here’s what Forte told that outlet:

“In a couple weeks, when postproduction is over, I’m gonna get in there.”

The outlet doesn’t include the question so the lack of context is a bit confusing and some could certainly assume Forte is talking about being in post-production on MacGruber 2, but based on the quotes from The Wrap and a little logic, I’m fairly certain he’s referring to post-production for The Last Man on Earth.
