Will Forte Says “There Will Be Some Form of MACGRUBER 2″

     April 9, 2013

MacGruber has had an interesting journey from an easily dismissed adaptation to box office flop to cult hit.  It continues to rack up devotees who happily quote it and know what “KFBR392″ means.  But despite these fans, MacGruber 2 looks highly unlikely.  Last June, star and co-writer Will Forte said he didn’t think any sane person would fund it, but he added that they were definitely writing the script within the next six months.  Forte can always look forward to fans asking about a sequel, and he recently provided an update while doing press for his upcoming drama, Run and Jump.

Hit the jump for what Forte had to say about MacGruber 2.  Forte will next be voicing a new character in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, and he’s playing the lead in Nebraska, the new film from Alexander Payne (The Descendants).

macgruber-imageForte tells EW,

“We are going to make MacGruber 2 for sure,” he says. “Whether we have to do it with a video camera in our backyards – there will be some form of MacGruber 2.”

Somehow, a Macgruber 2 shot with video cameras in someone’s backyard sounds amazing.  If the first movie would be the guy MacGruber envisions himself to be, then the sequel would be who he actually is: low-rent, cheap, and goofy. Presumably, everyone would have to park on a street without meters.

If you think Kickstarter would be the way to go on getting the movie made, director and co-writer Jorma Taccone was way ahead of you:

“Jorma [Taccone], the MacGruber director, he had the idea to do a Kickstarter like two years ago,” Forte laments. “He kept saying ‘We should do a Kickstarter’ and we were like ‘Yeah, maybe at some point.’ He’s always ahead of the curve. That’s the lesson you learn — always listen to Jorma.”

While I’m not comfortable with studios using Kickstarter, I can’t deny the appeal of seeing donation rewards like “I will suck your dick”, “I will let you fuck me”, “You can get fucked by me”, “You can watch me fuck something,”, “Just tell me what you want me to fuuuuuuuck!”

Please no, this was one of the movies that deserved to fail. There was nothing funny about it.

I wouldn’t say that, the trailer was pretty good.

Completely disagree to the above comments! While upon my first viewing I was like “okay, I don’t get it”….I gave it another chance based on a supreme recommendation from my friend. Since then, I’ve grown to love the one-liners and the WAY-over-the-top situations. One of those movies that just grows and grows and grows on you….kinda like Anchorman which I was also underwhelmed with the first time viewing it…and it’s a classic now!

Please Yes!!! It’s not surprising that the original movie tanked seeing as how it’s really a film for comedy nerds (a limited audience among the mainstream). Add to that the fact that it had to battle against years of bad will due to a long line of awful SNL movies and it was destined to fail. Hopefully the cult it’s been building among comedians and filmmakers (Christopher Nolan is said to be a fan) as well as Kristen Wiig’s post MacGruber star power will help turn the tide in it’s favor..
