Back in September, the long-rumored Mad Max: Fury Road black-and-white edition finally got a release date, and now we have our first look at the footage that been rendered in monochrome.

Yahoo! has released a brief featurette with director George Miller explaining why he wanted to take his brightly colored masterpiece and present it in black and white. Miller explains that the inspiration for removing the color goes all the way back to the scoring sessions for Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior where the composer would get a low-quality, black-and-white dupe cut for scoring the film. When Miller saw his movie presented in black and white, he was surprised to learn how much better it worked for the overall tone he was going for. When it came time to make Fury Road, he asked the film’s colorist if it would be possible to see some scenes presented in black and white, and he feels like they present “the best version” of the film.

This featurette gives us a few brief moments of Fury Road in black and white, and I’m definitely curious to see how the film plays without its eye-popping color.

There are two ways to see the black and white version:

"Blood and Chrome Edition...will be available Dec. 6 in a two-disc set with the original theatrical release ($30) and also as part of the Mad Max High-Octane Collection ($55 for DVD; $80 for Blu-ray). The latter collects the full quartet of films — including Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1982), and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) — along with a movie-length documentary on the saga and a making-of featurette on The Road Warrior. Both packages contain Miller’s introduction.

Personally, I’m leaning towards the Blood and Chrome Edition since I don’t have much desire to own the original Mad Max and Beyond Thunderdome.  That being said, I might wait until the price on Blood and Chrome drops a bit since I already own Fury Road on Blu-ray.
