Fury is headed to the Croisette. The Cannes Film Festival announced today (via Variety) that director George Miller’s highly anticipated sequel Mad Max: Fury Road will have its world premiere at the prestigious fest ahead of its May 15th theatrical release. Sadly, the film will be playing out of competition, missing out on a chance to earn the moniker “Palm d’Or Winner Mad Max: Fury Road,” but it’s still an honor to be chosen as a highlight of such a renowned film festival.

The fest kicks off on May 13th, so the Cannes folk won’t be getting too big a jump on seeing Fury Road before everyone else, but if the response is positive it’ll give the film a nice boost on opening weekend. Miller’s film literally tracks a single chase sequence over the course of the entire movie, with Tom Hardy playing Max (a man of few words, as evidenced by the trailers) and Charlize Theron playing the one-armed Furiosa, a mysterious woman whom Max comes across during the pursuit.

Everything we’ve seen thus far from Mad Max: Fury Road tells me this movie will be amazing, and the only problem now is that it’ll have to live up to some very high expectations. Fingers crossed for something big, loud, and most importantly: weird.

As for the Cannes Film Festival itself, Joel and Ethan Coen are heading up this year’s jury. The full lineup has yet to be announced, but as with every year, I’m sure there will be some fascinating films getting their first looks in the South of France.
