Junkie XL has been working in music for decades and as a composer since the late 90s, but he’s really exploded in Hollywood over the past several years with 300: Rise of an Empire, Divergent, Run All Night, and now his brilliant score for Mad Max: Fury Road (he has no sign of slowing down as he has three more films left this year: Black Mass, Kill Your Friends, and Point Break). He’ll also be working on the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice score with Hans Zimmer.

He’s a composer you need to know, and so it helps that Warner Bros. has released a new Mad Max: Fury Road featurette with Junkie XL explaining his process on George Miller’s tremendous action film. In the featurette, Junkie XL (real name “Tom Holkenborg”) calls Fury Road a rock opera, and says his approach is to blend the old school with the new school. Specifically, he points out that he’s trying to mix heavy metal with specific themes, and you can definitely feel that in Fury Road.
