New MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Images Reveal Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and a Very White Nicholas Hoult

Earlier today, we got our first official look at director George Miller’s long-awaited follow-up Mad Max: Fury Road.  It was a tame EW cover featuring the film’s leads, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, but now a batch of new images has surfaced, and they confirm that this movie is going to be absolutely nuts.  Nicholas Hoult is nearly unrecognizable as the bald and makeup-clad Nux, while the dystopian landscape is filled out with plenty of dangerous vehicles and sketchy characters.  Miller describes the film as one long chase sequence that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes, and based on these first-look images, the ride is going to be anything but dull.

Hit the jump to check out the Mad Max: Fury Road images.  The film also stars Riley Keough, Zoe Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Rosei Huntington-Whiteley, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, and Abbey Lee KershawMad Max: Fury Road opens on May 15, 2015.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mad Max: Fury Road:

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is the fourth film of George Miller‘s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.

Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos.

And… Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

So Miller’s basically rebooted his own film? Has this ever been done before? Answers on a postcard.

    • indy42

Hitchcock remade his own movie once. And it was worse.

      • Joseph M

Great example, Indy. I had to check that on wiki.

      • Bo

Read above. Miller is not remaking any movie he’s already done. It’s a completely different story/movie…

      • indy42

I’m not saying he is, but Hitchcock remaking TMWKTM is the closest example I could think of.

      • Bo

Okay…I guess. I’m lost on all this rebooting his own film stuff. To me, it’s just another sequel to the Man Max films. There’s already been 3 and now this will be the 4th. Otherwise, I’m lost…my bad! So….lol…I’ll blame it all on Joseph saying/asking he’s basically rebooting his own film? That don’t make sense to me…so it’s Joseph’s bad?…lol…

      • Al

The Man Who Knew Too Much remake is top 5 hitchcock…

      • indy42

I personally much prefer the 1934 version — you just can’t beat Peter Lorre. But to each his own.

      • The Flobbit

It’s generally accepted that Hitchcock’s top 5 are: Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, The Birds, and North by Northwest.

The Man Who Knew Too Much is illogical, filled with plot holes, and lacks Hitchcock’s famous “umph” and pizzazz. Still a good movie, but nearly up to snuff with the others above.

      • simsnola

North by Northwest is, unfortunately, not in the Hitchcock masterpiece collection box set, the Man Who Knew Too Much remake is. Loved both movies, but I have never seen a Hitchcock movie, any of the masterpieces, and have not loved it.

    • Bo

It is not a reboot; or a redo; or whatever. It is a completely different story with Mad Max as the main guy. As in the first, Mad Max, then the second The Road Warrior, then the third Beyond Thunderdome or whatever…then now this fourth one. All of them different stories with the Max character. Righto?

      • Joseph M

Righto, Bo. Glad you’re here to keep us all up to date on the reboot.
If your after Mad Max 4 you better call Mel Gibson.

      • Bo

Okay, man. I give. Perhaps I just don’t understand what you actually mean by Miller rebooting his own film. If so then he rebooted twice already? I don’t understand, man. My bad. Please enlighten me to what you mean by reboot as this technically could be Mad Max 4 only without Gibson. Righto? Like Bay has just done with Transformers 4 without LaBeouf? Like Paramont did with the Jack Ryan character from Baldwin to Harrsion Ford, then to Affleck and now ?? Pine or someone? See? I’m just confused so be kind, eh?

      • Excpired

Imo completely new actors, new lead, its a virtual reboot. The character of Mad Max is always assumed to have lived through many different adventures and activities and each movie is a glimpse into just one of them. But to pretend this isn’t a reboot of Mad Max is kidding yourself, if this movie takes off then there will be more sequels to come with the new lead and if not it will be dead in the water for a decade or two.

Also Transformers 4 is a reboot, and its an attempt to salvage the guys reputation for making crap movies. Though it probably still won’t be very good, at least the action looks like its been slowed down and has become readable instead of just a bunch of flashing metal going back and forth at lightning speed.

      • joeybot

Every Mad Max movie had a whole new cast except for Mel Gibson. Basically he just recast Max with an actor who’s the correct age to follow closely with the originals and not do a 20 year time jump. When they cast Roger Moore as Bond did they reboot the series? No, those were direct sequels. They didn’t reboot Batman when Val Kilmer got cast in the third movie. It’s the same thing.

      • Bo

That was my thinking also…but what the hell do I know? Thanks though for your perceptions of this whole reboot, remake, blah blah blah thing…lol…

      • joeybot

I think in the end, Miller just doesn’t care a whole lot. Remember, he cast the same actor as two different main characters in Road Warrior and Thunderdome. At least I THINK they’re supposed to be, who can tell for sure? But that’s sort of a reboot in a way. I don’t know, none of the movies are very much linked to each other. As long as we get some amazing stunts and weird shit, and it looks like we are…I’m good!

      • http://delusionallosers.wordpress.com/ Anthony Donovan Stokes

Transformers : Age of Exctiotion is not a reboot

      • Joseph M

Exactly! Otherwise, it would be silly, like The Dark Knight Rises actually being Batman 7. I knew you’d get there in the end, little buddy.

    • cloud720

      Aparently Micheal Bay rebooted transformers.

Evil Dead 2 is also basically a remake of Evil Dead.

    • The Flobbit

Michael Haneke with Funny Games. Hitchcock with The Man that Knew Too Little. Michael Mann with Heat (look it up), Neill Blomkamp with District 9 (remake of Alive in Joburg), to name a few.

Miller says it’s a sequel, not a reboot.

Mad Mad 3 basically rearranged a bunch of skits from RW.
Losing the weapons and vehicle, having to barter a favor/battle the antagonist to re-equip, saving the hippies/children, the end chase.

But every kung-fu movie or rom-com has almost the same plot.
Its an arch type simple story that can be retold as a western, a Sci-Fi, an action movie, etc.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sangbaran Sam

    hopefully should be good.
    when is the trailer out?

    • NephewOfAnarchy

I assume if they’re dropping images, the trailer is ready to go. Releasing it for July 4 crowds might be a good bet.

Reminds me of the movie Doomsday

    • MCP

Odd, as I watched Doomsday I said, hmm this reminds me of Mad Max, though not as good…

    • Ashtalon

Doomsday was a complete ripoff of Escape From New York. Rather shameless about it too. And awful as well.

      • Bo

I don’t know about awful. I was rather pleased to be watching Rhona Mitra although the thing, so that wasn’t so awful…eh?

      • Werefon

It works as a homage to old school films, right? Even the way it was shot.

      • Excpired

Doomsday was a fun movie, it wasn’t a GREAT movie but it was entertaining – also yeah way too many kids on this site who never saw original Mad Max. Pretty much any actioner movie you can think of from the last 2 decades was inspired by Mad Max, if its post-apocalypse it probably ripped off Mad Max.

      • Bo

I agree totally with your Doomsday opinion (plus Rhona Mitra, man she’s something…met her once in a Whole Food check out line…nice chat with her for a few minutes…I digress…sorry, lol) And ur also correct re: kids on the site who never saw the orig as it really was the genesis of all that has followed. Road Warrior seems to hit it on all cylinders for me. Hope Miller was able to do what he’s set out to do with this new one with Hardy.

      • Bo

Hadn’t thought about it in that manner, but yea, I guess one could look at it that way. Thanks.

    • Werefon

It’s a Circle. Third Act of Doomsday was a homage to a Mad Max.
I kinda appreciated Doomsday for being old school. First Act was a Carpenter movie, Second is Cannibal Holocoust, Third is Mad Max.

I mean a lot of it wasn’t good but overall I have a positive feeling about it.
      And You?

  • MCP

That last picture sold it for me!!!

  • bidi

i thought Theron was the villain. that synopsis makes it sound like she and Hardy are allies

Is Tom Hardy even the star of this?

    • dude

      What do you mean?

  • Daniel O’Reilly

Charlize looks astonishingly like Melissa McBride (Carol) on The Walking Dead.

  • Max Rockatansky

110 mins of non stop actions? Sounds good and bad at the same time. So that means no fucking story or backstory and buildup. And why the fuck do they even call this Mad Max since Mel Gibson’s Max won’t be starring.

    • Neven

Well, technically the character is the same, just played by different actor. And if there’s anyone who can do it as good as Gibson, it’s Hardy.

  • The Flobbit

This looks absolutely batshit insane. And I mean that in the very best of ways!

Theres definitely some cool stuff on display so far,
but there’s some aesthetic choices that kinda seem like the mark of an old director who doesn’t quite have the creativity they had when they were younger and has to lean on expensive sets, effects and hollywood stars and models these days.

    Happened to lucas,
    happened to ridley.

But although it looks too polished, shiny and 3D to be the visceral thrill RW was, it still looks better then what any of the hipster imitators are doing.

IE: It looks kinda good, which is much better then all the rest of the trash.

  • Sara

Hank McCoy looks fucking scary! and he is in serious need of some chap stick! this looks amazing!
