madagascar-4-release-dateAs Exhibitor Relations reports, DreamWorks Animation has released their upcoming slate of films for the 2017 and 2018 calendar years.  It’s heavy on sequels (which is to be expected these days) though two of the three films are only putting forth a second effort.  The Croods performed well both domestically and abroad, bringing in nearly $600 million worldwide.  Puss in Boots turned in similar numbers in its 2011 release, earning just north of $550 million.  Madagascar remains one of the studio’s most lucrative franchises, earning $500 million, then $600 million, then $750 million in each of its three previous releases, not to mention the upcoming spin-off The Penguins of Madagascar, which opens November 26th of this year.  Perhaps Madagascar 4 will cross that magical billion-dollar barrier in 2018.

The lone live-action release date in this batch is the Hitman sequel, which sees Friend starring as the title character, Agent 47, with Quinto and Thomas Kretschmann taking on villainous roles.  Ciaran Hinds also stars in an undisclosed role that’s described as pivotal and has a scientific emphasis.

    Madagascar 4? Seriously?

The third one was the best out of the 3, its deserves another one even if it is the final one.

I can’t believe we’re even announcing the day that movies will come out…4 years in advance! I don’t even know if I will be alive in 4 years, and you expect me to care about Captain Underpants?

This isn’t news that’s meant to be read by the average moviegoer. It’s the studio staking its claim(s) on the Hollywood release date calender. Animated movies do take longer than live action films, and therefore the studios behind them claim release dates that coincide with when they will be complete.

It’s still incredible. I think these guys must have agendas stretching up to 5 years in the future!

    • Rico

Absolutelly agree with you, this 5+ year plans are insane! It would be so muchs better if they release info about future films 1 or 2 years before it goes out

It does seem silly, but the release schedule gets so crowded it kind of makes sense for them to claim a date before another studio does, although there’s nothing they can do if someone else puts something big on the same date or close to it, other than rescheduling.

Hooray for the Croods and Puss in Boots to get the sequel treatment. Let’s hope Netflix will keep us occupied with their upcoming shows until the new big screen adventures arrive. Good luck this week with HTTYD 2 to Dreamworks because if they are going to give us a good or better show as 4 years ago, they are going to need it
