While we won’t be seeing Greta Gerwig’s How I Met Your Mother continuation (which I’m, obviously, still hung up about), the indie darling is giving us more of the bread and butter of her craft. Following her most recent Noah Baumbach endeavor, Mistress America, Gerwig takes the lead role in Maggie’s Plan and the first trailer has landed online.

From writer-director Rebecca Miller (Proof), the film tells of Maggie, a New Yorker working at the New School who decides to have a baby on her own. That’s when the man she thinks is Mr. Right (Ethan Hawke) steps into the picture. The two fall in love and strike up an affair, even though the man has a wife (Julianne Moore), but once he leaves her for Maggie, the woman realizes that maybe she’s just not that into him.

Watch the first trailer, which debuted on Entertainment Weekly:

Also spotted in the footage are Travis Fimmel (Warcraft), Bill Hader, and Maya Rudolph. “I thought it was important that you believe that these people are in a world where ideas are sexy and where knowing someone’s mind is the most attractive thing that can happen,” Miller told EW of the film, which was shot around New York state.

Maggie’s Plan made the festival rounds last year, including Toronto International Film Festival (where Matt caught the film and said it “rarely feels dull” and has “a personality all its own”) and New York Film Festival. Much like Gerwig’s semi-recent string of films, this too is one part NYC love story. Miller said:

I’m a third generation New Yorker so I have this deep love for the city. The story has several love stories in it but one of them was certainly my own with New York City.

Maggie's Plan hits select theaters on May 20th.
