Warner Bros. has released the first official image and synopsis for director Steven Soderbergh‘s male stripper movie, Magic Mike.  The film stars the perpetually shirtless Matthew McConaughey along with Alex Pettyfer, Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Mangianello, Olivia Munn, Riley Keough, Cody Horn, and Adam Rodriguez.  For those unaware, Magic Mike is based on Tatum’s real life experiences as a 19-year-old stripper, and tells “a story of friendship set in the world of male strippers.” Here’s what Soderbergh had to say about the project:

“When Channing talked to me about this, I thought it was one of the best ideas I’d ever heard for a movie. I said I wanted in immediately. It’s sexy, funny and shocking. We’re using Saturday Night Fever as our model, so hopefully we’re on the right track.”

Hit the jump for more.

While the project originally started filming with no studio attached, WB picked it up in late October and has scheduled a June 29, 2012 release date.  With G.I. Joe: Retaliation opening the same day, that means Channing Tatum is going to be fighting Cobra for Paramount and stripping for Warner Bros. over the July 4th holiday.   I wonder which one will be more explosive.

Here’s the first image from the movie followed by the official synopsis.

Dramatic Comedy. Set in the world of male strippers, “Magic Mike” is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Channing Tatum (“Dear John,” “Step Up”) in a story inspired by his real life. The film follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.

Finally, I also just posted new high resolution images from The Dark Knight Rises and new images and synopses for Project X, Bullet to the Head, Rock of Ages and The Apparition.  Click the links to check them out.

  1. If it wasn’t for Steven Soderbergh directing this movie, then I would have said that there is no way this film is gonna be good. But then again, Soderbergh is directing it so let’s wait and see.

    • You thought a stripper movie was going to be the one where McConaughey left his shirt on? You clearly don’t understand the principles of stripping. Or stripping movies. Or McConaughey.

  2. This is like the pheromone-summoning fest that is Twilight, only leaving out all pretense of a complicated storyline. I mean, yes, this might have a story, and it might even be an interesting one, but let’s not pretend this won’t be mainly about highly-lusted-for hunks taking off their shirts to please their audience. It’s like The Expendables for straight females and gay males.

    • Well, Twilight is an over-dramatic genre movie that has no idea that it’s a genre movie. This is a male stripper movie. Yes they both go after those who lust after the hunks… but this one is up front an honest, while not ruining vampires and werewolves.. This is already better.

  3. This hack director just can’t quit. I am not going to waste my time looking at men. I’m into women. I am a man. This movie will bomb like the rest of his recent garbage.

  4. “GYMNASTICS. Will now be held in Taylor Prestons meat works, and will ilucnde carcass vaulting and swinging from meat hooks.”Heh, I’ve done a bit of engineering design work for TP over the years.
