The first trailer and poster for director Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike have gone online.  The film is loosely based on Channing Tatum‘s days as a male stripper, and the actor stars as a mentor to a young “exotic dancer” played by Alex Pettyfer.   Though some may balk at the “Channing Tatum stripper movie”, this world actually looks like it could be a lot of fun through Soderbergh’s eyes.  The trailer opens with the easy sell, but once we get into the plot it’s obvious that there’s a bit more to Magic Mike than professional undressing.  Soderbergh isn’t one to do Step Up-type movie where every single plot beat is predictable and groan-worthy (which this movie could easily have been), so I’m interested to see what drew him to this story.  Moreover, Matthew McConaughey appears to be having a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to watching him steal every scene he’s in.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Olivia Munn, Riley Keough, Cody Horn and Adam RodriguezMagic Mike opens on June 29th.

Here’s the synopsis for Magic Mike:

Set in the world of male strippers, “Magic Mike” is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Channing Tatum (“Dear John,” “Step Up”) in a story inspired by his real life. The film follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.

    • it may be the RED EPIC camera. which is owned by Soderberg(who’s also the DP of the film). the look is somewhat the same from THE SOCIAL NETWORK(where again, they borrowed the RED EPIC that Soderberg owns). even the party scene in the beginning is somewhat reminiscent of the party scenes in THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

Soderberg is NOT a flashy DP. and one of the reasons he switched to digital was because he can light Fast(which is accustomed to the way he works. 1 movie per year, sometimes 2)

BTW, does anyone feels this could be Soderberg’s BOOGIE NIGHTS

      • It’s just shitty color grade made by wannabe-colorist Soderbergh himself. Just because you can dial your colors by yourself with a digital camera doesn’t mean you don’t need professional colorist for your movie, for fucks sake.

Red EPIC actually able to produce amazing daylight footage, all the issues you see there completely because the director is a fucking colorblind or something.

  1. And I though it’ll be the story of Alex Pettyfer since he is playing young Channing Tatum in it but its full of Channing Tatum himself, He may suddenly gave two surprise hits The Vow and 21 Jump Street but Common that’s not the way to sell the movie… No Matt Bomer and No Alex Pettyfer Story and No Riley keough… I’m disappointed!

P.S who the f**k is Cody Horn? and that B**** Olivia Munn? damn seriously…

  2. Tatum is having a pretty big 2012 so far. Too bad he’s not gonna be in the new GI Joe, but he got 10,000 cool points for being freaking hysterical in 21 Jump Street

  3. Man, that looks pretty lame. Add to the list of “It was alright, I guess.” Soderbergh movies.

Girlfriend Experience, The Informant, Contagion, Haywire and now Magic Mike. Soderbergh has become the king of bland.
