Disney has released a new Maleficent featurette along with the IMAX poster.  The film tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the titular villain (Angelina Jolie), and how a betrayal sets off a drive for revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides.  This featurette features interviews with Jolie, Elle Fanning (who plays the Princess Aurora), screenwriter Linda Woolverton (The Lion King), and director Robert Stromberg (the two-time Oscar winning art director of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland).  Although this featurette contains new footage, I'm starting to become a little bewildered at how little we've seen from this movie.  I'm not complaining—I'm usually in favor of less marketing, more surprises—but it's less than a month away, and although Disney has another family film this month (Million Dollar Arm), this is a big, fantasy spectacle.  Thankfully, what we've seen so far looks pretty good.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette and IMAX poster.  The film also stars Sharlto CopleySam RileyImelda StauntonJuno Temple, and Lesley Manville.  Maleficent opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 30th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Maleficent:

“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.
