A Japanese trailer for Disney’s Maleficent has gone online. The film tells the story of how the Sleeping Beauty villain went bad. Angelina Jolie plays the titular character, a woman whose betrayal sets off a drive of revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides. While previous trailers have unsurprisingly pushed Jolie’s presence, this one takes a closer look at Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), which is a nice change. I have nothing against Jolie, who looks like she’s having a lot of fun playing the role, but there’s a larger story at play, and I’m glad they’re showing some it with this new footage.

Here’s the official synopsis for Maleficent:
“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.
