New Trailer for MALEFICENT Starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, and Sharlto Copley

Disney has released a new trailer for the live-action Sleeping Beauty reimaging, Maleficent.  The film tells the famous fairy tale from the perspective of the eponymous villain, played by Angelina Jolie.  There was a new trailer last week, and while it was good, I like this one better because it puts the emphasis on the eye-catching visuals, which isn’t too surprising when you consider that the director is Robert Stromberg, who earned Oscars for his art direction on Alice in Wonderland and Avatar.  It also looks like Jolie is having a blast with the role without chewing the scenery.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Elle Fanning, Sharlto CopleySam RileyImelda StauntonMiranda RichardsonJuno Temple, and Lesley ManvilleMaleficent opens in 3D on May 30th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Maleficent:

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

    Not bad.
    Not bad at all.

Wow. This really changed my thoughts about the film, completely threw me off. Didn’t know Disney was going dark. That was pretty good.

    • George

So much better than that horrendous previous trailer.. They would’ve been better off in holding out till this one dropped instead. Anyways, it looks pretty good.

  • James

Love Angie! Will check this out when released.

  • Norrtron

I’m actually kind of interested in this movie now, never thought that was going to happen.

  • Theatre Junkie

This ad campaign is doing a good job. I’m a fan of the contrast of the trailers.

  • The Flobbit

Why am I actually getting interested in this movie? I’ll tell you why – it’s the dark and twisted version of Disney’s most beautiful song. Heck, this was actually kind of creepy! Still don’t know about the really obvious CGI monsters and vines.

    • Sean

@theflobbit:disqus You’re not the only one getting interested in this movie. Read everyone’s comments on here and you’ll see what I mean, except for the persons comment on here that is longest comment on this webpage so far.

I never stated anything other than my obvious torn view. I can’t make up my mind if I like it now. The trailers are making it hard for me to really decide. Last one was campy, before that boring, the teaser was dry but then this dark one – which I liked for the most part.

It all boils down to the rating and length now. That will be the determining factor.

      • Sean

@orianalianna:disqus I hope this movie will be somewhere around 2 hours and to 2 hours and 30 minutes long. Or maybe even a tad longer then that, so that after I see it in theaters I won’t leave the theater feeling unsatisfied with the movie because of it being short. Which that happened in the past when I’ve seen short movies in theaters, because when I see a short movie that I like I always want see more from it.

      • The Flobbit

Are you some sort of studio plant? You hype this movie to the moon and defend it everywhere. We’ll like this movie…or not, on our OWN.

      • Sean

@theflobbit:disqus No, I’m not some studio plant, I’m just a big fan of this movie. Trust me, I’m not going to be the only person that will like this movie, and I assure you that.

      • The Flobbit

You’re a big fan of this movie…when all that has been released has been a trailer and 2 TV spots, a poster and a synopsis?

      • Sean

@theflobbit:disqus Yes, Because I like what I’ve seen from the trailers. The new video above isn’t a tv spot, it’s trailer and its the best trailer I’ve seen for this movie yet!

      • orianalianna

I wouldn’t mind if it were 3 hours myself, if anything that would be quite encouraging in terms of development and story. I would feel far more confident about seeing it for sure.

      • Sean

@orianalianna:disqus There are rarely any movie these days that are 3 hours long. Most of the movies these days are close to 3 hours, but not exactly 3 hours or longer then 3 hours either.

      • orianalianna

True, but anything less than two and a half hours for a movie like this would only feel rushed, and there is no way they would get much out in terms of character development. They could extend it to 3 hours on DVD which would be a treat sort of like LOTR was. Only LOTR started as 3 hours from the get go and became much longer in the extended version – which I also liked. I don’t mind 3 hours at all anymore, I’m going to a movie I might as well make a day out of it.

      • Sean

@orianalianna:disqus I think this movie will at least be 2 hours and 15 minutes.

      • orianalianna

We’ll just have to see. Disney has a lot to measure up on: darkness, depth and if this long, character development. Thus far John Cater, Lone Ranger and the latest Pirates movie have all been epic disappointments.

      • Sean

@orianalianna:disqus Yeah, I’m actually pretty sure that 2 hours and 15 minutes is what Maleficent’s running time is.

  • orianalianna

It started off proper but then all it did was make me want to re-watch LOTR. I’m still horrified that they turned her into a protagonist instead of just being evil incarnate and servant of Satan.

I do love the perverted version of ‘Once Upon a Dream’ though – I used to hate it till now. And the darker feel is promising but I have been misled by dark trailers before so I’m not biting just yet. If it ends up being rated PG 13 I just know I’m going to hate it. Only because THIS kind of movie frankly shouldn’t be PG-13 it deserves better. A Pg-13 Disney ‘dark’ movie is the Jar Jar Binks of dark films.

This will determine how far Disney will go in the dark – and even influence my opinion of it’s handling of Star Wars.

    • Sean

@orianalianna:disqus It is either going to be PG or PG-13. There is no R rated Disney movie, and I HIGHLY highly doubt its going to be rated G.

      • orianalianna

We can at least HOPE for a G but yes it is highly doubtful. PG-13 though will tarnish it without a doubt. Nothing worse than seeing potential in a movie only to see it being wasted.

      • Sean

@orianalianna:disqus It won’t get the G rating, I can assure you that. No, I don’t think PG-13 will tarnish it at all actually. And it certainly be wasted if it’s given a PG-13 or PG rating, there have been plenty of movies that were given the PG or PG-13 and they turned out fine. Although, If there are R rated movies in the past and there sequels were only given a PG or PG-13 rating that’s something I’d be worried about, especially if its a movie in a movie franchise that I like.

      • orianalianna

This is true and I do want this movie to do well for the most part. I still have my reservations but I suppose if I do manage to see this I’ll go in with little to expect; that way I won’t be disappointed. This is Disneys first real ‘dark’ movie so it will be quite the factor to take into account for future dark installments.

      • Sean

@orianalianna:disqus That is exactly what I do as well, I always go to see movies with low expectations, so that when I leave the theater after seeing the movie, I will be satisfied with the movie after its over. That always works for me.
