Disney has released the first poster for the upcoming Sleeping Beauty redo Maleficent, and it’s fittingly all about Angelina Jolie’s titular character.  The film tells the Sleeping Beauty story from the point of view of the villain, and it’s the first in a string of live-action adaptations of classic Disney stories set to hit theaters over the next few years (it will be followed by Cinderella and Cruella).  The first trailer will be released online this Wednesday, November 13th at 9am EST, so we’ll have a good idea of what to expect at that time.  Robert Stromberg, the Oscar-winning production designer of Alice in Wonderland and Avatar, makes his feature directorial debut on the film.

Hit the jump to take a closer look at the poster, and check back here tomorrow morning to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Leslie ManvilleMaleficent opens on May 30, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Maleficent:

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.
