Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Maleficent.  Directed by Robert Stromberg, the film is a reimagining of the classic Sleeping Beauty story told from the villain’s point of view.  Angelina Jolie plays Maleficent, a beautiful, pure-hearted young woman who becomes the protector of her village when an invading army threatens its harmony.  Following a brutal betrayal, Maleficent becomes bent on revenge and her pure heart begins to turn to stone, paving the way for the story that plays out in Sleeping Beauty. This first trailer is very much a teaser in that we only get quick glimpses of Jolie as the titular character, with the focus actually turning to Elle Fanning as the young Aurora.  It’s very clear from this trailer that the film will be in the vein of Disney’s other CG-heavy fantasy pics Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful (Stromberg served as production designer on both), but I’m interested to see how the arc of Jolie’s character plays out.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer and to check out some new images.  The film also stars Sharlto CopleySam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley ManvilleMaleficent opens in theaters on May 30, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Maleficent:

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Seriously, I think they just copied and pasted those landscape shots pre-giant CGI from JtGS. Do we even know why the hell she is raising those vine tree things? No, we’re just supposed to drop our jaws and say “WOW THATS SOO COOL. SHE CRAY CRAY. Here’s my money…”

        “Do
we even know why the hell she is raising those vine tree things?”

Watchthe original 1959 Disney cartoon. Maleficent creates the vines to keep anywould be heroes from rescuing Aurora thus breaking her curse and to test PrincePhillip’s love for her. That’s why. Now do the vines look cool? Hell no. It was the only thing in the trailer that I didn’t like. It was about as realistic as whoframed Rodger Rabbit.

      • Chris Embury

        Roger Rabbit wasn’t real?…sad.

It was a weirdly edited trailer. This completely gives me the vibe of that Oz movie. It seems that’s the new formula Disney is going to using to make real-action fantasy films from now on.

I’ve always been weirdly excited for this, as Maleficent is by far the coolest Disney villain in forever (Frollo’s the evillest, make no mistake), and Sleeping Beauty was a gorgeously animated, touching, and fantastic (literally) foray into romantic faerie tales. It remains my favourite Disney film.

I hope this does it justice, and if anyone can…it’s Jolie.

    AFTER TRAILER:

    THE BAD:
    -Little oz fairies
    -Elle’s accent
-the CGI (though it’s probably not finished yet)
    -The giant thorns
    -childish tone

    THE GOOD:
    -Non-CGI cinematography
    -makeup, costume design
-Jolie’s accent – like Galadriel turned bad
    -Aurora and the spindle
    -the darkness of it all
-Set deisgn looks believable (biggest detriment of Mirror Mirror)
    -Final line is decent

    I’ll watch this space…

    • peter

well what did you expect with childish tone this is a disney movie aimed for kids

    • Sean

There are no Oz fairies in Maleficent.

      • The Flobbit

You saw them – those floating little glowing fairies or whatever they’re called. Aurora is touching one….

      • Sean

@theflobbit:disqus No, You misunderstood me. I meant that the fairies from Oz: the Great and Great powerful are not in this Maleficent movie. The fairies in this movie are different ones.

      • The Flobbit

Of course, of course. I meant that they look vaguely similar, and they’re another similarity between two magical, visually active Disney films.

      • Sean

@theflobbit:disqus Good point. I’m very impressed with how this movie looks, way more so then I ever was impressed with Oz: The Great and Powerful and Alice in Wonderland, which look like ‘meh’ compared to this new Maleficent movie, If you get what I am saying?

      • The Flobbit

Certainly. I also get that Jolie has a real screen presence here, and to FULLY get my attention they need to put in MORE of her character, not to mention the awesome talents of Sharlto freakin’ Copley!

      • Sean

        @theflobbit:disqus
Oh, I’m sure that Sharlto Copley will have plenty of screen time in Maleficent, as much a Angelina Jolie will in Maleficent. I’ve seen him in that movie called District 9, I’ve noticed his really good acting in that movie.

      • The Flobbit

I rather think that Sharlto Copley will play a king – perhaps the one that rampages Maleficent’s home, perhaps Aurora’s father. He will have a sizeable amount of screentime, and might even get some great lines, but the film will be dominated by Maleficent.

Yes, Very good point you’ve made there.

      • The Flobbit

Thankee kindly. Sharlto Copley is an electrifying and diverse actor, and I can’t wait for Oldboy, where he looks to play a ruthless, scarred, and dangerous villain. *rubs hands together*

      • Sean

@theflobbit:disqus I’m looking forward to seeing him in Maleficent, after I saw him in District 9.

      • The Flobbit

District 9 is JUST STUNNING. An amazing, action-packed, sharp and smart, excellently acted, fully realized instant sci-fi classic.

      • Sean

@theflobbit:disqus I agree! I really enjoyed that movie on tv, when I saw it sometime recently.

Hope it’s better than Oz and Alice

    • Sean

@diegofernandosalazarproao:disqus Oh, It will be better then Oz and Alice. I’m actually almost completely sure of it. This movie looks a whole lot better then both Alice and Oz, just from what we see from the teaser trailer for it. The whole teaser trailer for Maleficent is better then all of Alice in Wonderland and Oz: The Great and Powerful, lol. Which I noticed that right after watching the first teaser trailer for Maleficent for the first time earlier today.

Hope it’s better than Oz and Alice

  • Nomis1700

This could be good. Of course, the VFX need to be finished and all but, I like what they’re aiming for. And I love Angelina Jolie, so there’s that.

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Jack

just want to see Sharlto Copley

  • Darkenmal

Elle’s accent is fucking terrible. I usually dislike Jolie but it looks like she was born for this role… I feel so confused.

  • alk

Is this movie a metaphor for Angelina Jolie’s insecurity about growing old?? That’s what I’m getting from this…I love how they have to REMIND US with THE HUGE BIG WORD “IS” incase we didn’t know Angelina Jolie was wearing those horns…lol

not bad. i’m a sucker for these big budget disney movies

  • Jen

Eh, Elle Fanning. They should’ve picked someone more stunning, but I guess it would be a no no to upstage Angelina. I only say this from an aesthetic perspective. Elle is very pretty, just no Aurora.

    • The Flobbit

Elle Fanning is an excellent actress, make no mistake, but I can’t help feeling this role was not meant for her.

    • Andrew

      She’s 15.

  • poppincherry

And in the end Brad is going to walk pass, un scathed, evil incantations conjured up by Angie while infected with ebola, syphilis ,conjunctivitis and bird flu.

  • Yurine

I wish it was less Aurora and more Maleficent.

    • The Flobbit

This was an Aurora-centric trailer. The real film will have lots more Maleficent thrown in. Olivia Hussey’s daughter will be playing a young Maleficent who gets thrown out of her home when her village is burned and her family killed by an invading kingdom. The film will track her descent into evil to make her a sympathetic villain.

  • Dean Kish

    what an unremarkable trailer!!

  • ʝoe ßloggs

Wow, I didn’t have any expectations of this film but honestly I liked that teaser and it now has me looking forward to the full trailer.

  • Johnny_Mook

From now on, Jolie won’t have any trouble putting her kids to sleep.

  • Igorw

Disney needs to stop mining all of their amazing back-catalog properties and turning them into the same generic, digitally-shot ‘sweeping epic fantasy fairy tale’ nonsense.

    And LOL at Fanning’s non-accent.

    • Bob

Oh look, another dark, dreary, gloomy fantasy movie.
