Early Screening Buzz for MAN OF STEEL Highly Positive; Teases “Tons of Action” and All-CG Cape

If one were to take a poll of the most anticipated film of 2013, director Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel would likely find itself towards the very top.  It’s been seven years since the character was last seen onscreen, and Warner Bros. is hoping that Man of Steel kicks off a new franchise for the studio following the conclusion of the Harry Potter series and Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy.  We’ve already seen a couple of trailers for the film, but the majority of the pic is still being kept tightly under wraps; Snyder only just recently confirmed that Michael Shannon is playing General Zod.

With the pic’s June release date looming, Warner Bros. recently got its first look at the full film by way of some early private studio screenings.  Reactions to those screenings appear to be highly positive, as a recent report sheds some light on what fans can expect from the pic.  Hit the jump to read on.

man-of-steel-posterThe folks over at JoBlo have a source that sent them some bullet point reactions from the early screenings at WB:

- Imagine a Nolan story with Snyder effects/action.
- It’s the best movie of the year.
- There’s TONS of action with Superman kicking all kinds of ass in his suit.
- The cape is CG’d most of the time so it can look awesome.
- They have intentionally left out most of the the Super action in trailers to save it.
- It’s not nearly as dour and serious as the trailers suggest.
- The movie is complete, minus the 3D post-conversion, which is currently taking place

To say it’s premature to call Man of Steel “the best film of the year” is a massive understatement, but it’s clear that the screening went over well.  Fans worried that we’re in for another romantic drama a la Superman Returns should be pleased, and I’m all for WB keeping the action-y bits under the hood until the film hits theaters; audiences are going to turn out for this movie no matter what, and I’d really enjoy not having half the film released online by way of trailers, TV spots, clips, etc. months before it even opens.  It’s also reassuring to hear that there’s some fun to be had despite the super serious nature of the trailers.

I imagine we’ll start to see much more from the film in the next few months as the release date looms closer, but for fans waiting with bated breath to see if Snyder pulls this thing off, hopefully these early screening reactions serve as a tiny bit of reassurance.  Man of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.

Can we really trust private studio screenings? Are WB execs really going to criticize any film with Nolan as a producer?

Count me just a little skeptical, though I hope the reboot will be great.

    • Assumption Junction

Oh Jesus Christ If is anything like the CG cape in Spawn justice league will never happen.

      • sense 11

Special effects have improved a lot since 97 , I’m sure it will look fine

  • Great white hype

Uh oh. Here comes the Marvel fanboy hate.

  • Nate H

I think that you can rust the WB execs response up to a certain point, Historically, studio execs don’t hold back in their screenings. Movies have been overhauled based on screenings like that. GI Joe: Retaliation got completely remade and pushed back an entire year based on screenings (both exec and test audiences). So if they don’t like something, that’s typically the time that they’ll say so. They’re all about money, and they aren’t going to pretend it’s good when it’s not and then lose tons of money. So this is encouraging – still gotta wait for better previews/the actual movie to be sure!

    • Ash Talon

Of course they’re going to say it’s good. They need to sell tickets and all kinds of merchandise. Don’t get me wrong, it may very well be good. However, they’re not going to say the screening didn’t go well, are they? How many times have we heard about movie testing extremely well only to have them not have much impact at the box office? And this is reporting from executives who have a large stake in having this film do well. They’re not going to sabotage their own film, even if it’s not good.

I do find it odd that they have to point out the CGI cape. Why even mention it?

And calling it the “best movie of the year” is pretty much grounds to dismiss the entire report. Don’t you think it’s premature (and a bit hyperbolic) to start throwing around statements like that?

      • Ray

yea to even mention to cape is CGI means…it looks CGI. the only movie that i can remember that had a kickass CGI cape was Spawn, but Supes’ cape doesn’t need that much going on.

      • Shawn

Put on a cape, open the sunroof while the driver is going 100 mph, then jump out. I’m certain a CGI cape will be needed to re-enact that awesomeness. Bet that cape goes CRAZY

  • Strong Enough

    Thank You Based Nolan

    • spidermanlivesinyourbedroom

Stop licking nolans ass….no one cared about batman begins. it is all joker hype and wall climbing inception that makes you talk that way.

and no CGI cape and this movie will not be good becuz of ACTION it simply needs to tell the story well and not drag on for hours like superman returns. also superman returns score sucked!! so hard. that choir.

and if you call me any trendy internet terms like “troll” you are cementing you place in the world as an eternal virgin.

      • numbersgame

        troll troll troll

      • Um, Sure

Troll isn’t a trendy word. It’s just what you’re doing. And most trolls have never even touched a girl so the “eternal virgin” comment is particularly ironic.

      • Manny

        TROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Caleb the Awesome

    Sounds awesome.

  • Hamza

I’m relieved the screening went well, I think I might be more hyped for this than Iron Man 3. So much that I even made my own version of the trailer with M83′s Outro added, lol

  • George Costanza

    “I think it moved!”

    Can’t wait!

  • UberMan

    Watchman…part deux

    • Manny

      AWESOME!! I love Watchman.

  • It\’s A Trap!

    It will be good!

  • Remember the early buzz for the Dark Knight Rises?

They called it the best pic of the year. Said it was tremendous. And then we got sean connery in a darth vader mask and a plot with more wholes in it than swiss cheese and a laughable ending. Chris Nolan’s a lying bastard who spits in his audiences eye. F him and F this movie.

    • Clay

What a lovely, lovely comment. Search your feelings…then I will break you.

    • ap30

“….a plot with more wholes….” Yes, because that is exactly how “holes” is spelled. Seriously dude you’re criticizing a film as if you could have made it better but yet you can’t spell or correctly use a 1st grade word. Go home.

      • Chad

To be fair, Tarantino can’t spell and his scripts read like a 1st grader wrote them… but he, somehow, won a 2nd Oscar for “writing.” That’s how the world works these days… you don’t need education nor intelligence to become successful.

      • Nolan is a worthless limey scumbag

Whaaaa. Somebody isn’t down with my superman movie were supe’s junk is only covered by body paint. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Dobby

Did you even see the movie? Or are you mad because your mom wouldn’t let you?

    • Manny

      You are a moron!!

  • Truth

Ah, silly fanboys will believe anything. Best movie of the year? We’re only 2 months into 2013…that’s your first red flag this is studio shilling on overdrive.

    • Mike

Is there a chance he means best WB movie of the year? That’s still not saying a lot, but as a WB exec I’m assuming he’s seen a good deal of their 2013 movies in some form or another. But I doubt he’s seen any of the Marvel movies, or knows anything about the sure fire Oscar bait of the fall.

  • Joroelcapo

The best movie of the year? WTF??? we are in february!!!!

    • spidermanlivesinyourbedroom

it’s just bullshit promotion from the studio so they can make money……they are worried about superman becuz returns sucked ass in the eyes of the audience AND they keep trying to hide the lack of red underwear cuz it takes supes out of the public eyes familiarity with him.

      • Um, Sure

You’ve devoted an awful lot of time to thinking about Supe’s underwear, no doubt.

  • tosh

I’m cautious about this one. I loved dawn of the dead, 300 was meh, and watchmen was ok. Sucker punch however was utter rubbish.
I really want this film to be good, but Snyder’s trajectory seems to be on the side of spectacle over substance. To be honest i’m more excited about Elysium.

  • Ur mom

They should view the movie to people outside of WB. :-/

  • patuniverse.com

Best movie of the year… I’ll be the judge of that.

    • james

Haha! Well we will certainly look forward to that buddy.

  • ap30

Even though WB is going to hype up their movie regardless the actual quality of it, I think it’s highly unlikely they would say something as ridiculous and ballsy as “It’s the best movie of the year” unless they knew they had one hell of a movie on their hands.

    • Steve

Of course they can say it if they didn’t have one hell of a movie on their hands. They are an un-named source. “They” can say anything in the service of PR.

      • ap30

Right, but don’t these “unnamed sources” represent WB? They’re basically just WB execs…therefore if their word sucks then it will make WB look bad regardless.

  • tom

clearly i’m the only one giving them the benefit of the doubt, but i took it as it’s the best movie of the year SO FAR. i don’t think anyone would go so far as to say – in february – that something is already the best movie the year will ever see. so i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. i’ll assume they meant so far, which, unless you count Zero Dark Thirty’s wide release in january, shouldn’t be that hard to do

I want this to be good but I expect it to be a let down. They’re retelling an origin story that your great grandmother knows so the majority of the movie is already wasted time and filler. I don’t care what twist they put on it because it’s the same general story. They need to act as if the universe already exists and not have us wait 2 hours until there’s a villain he can fight.

  • Jimmy B

“They have intentionally left out most of the the Super action in trailers to save it.”

That’s like saying: “We know we f*cked up the trailer, and now we’re trying to convince you we did it on purpose.”

    • sunny

      no it’s not

    • Bob

No its not at all lol. Trailer was one of the best trailers in years. Its just saying that to people worrying that itll be to serious and talky, dont worry it wont b cause theres still great action, which with zach snyder people should no there will be.

  • Harry

    DO NOT TRUST THESE EXECUTIVES!
Remember what they said about Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises”? They said it “epic”, “best movie of the year”, “will leave a lump in your throat”. That movie was the biggest disappointment of the year.

    • james

      Cool story bro.

    • Manny

You are the biggest disappointment in life.

  • Zac H

Wait a sec… Positive screen test… CG suit praise…. This sounds a bit familiar. Oh yeah it’s the same strategy WB used for Green Lantern. That turned out great.

  • terry

This movie is going to suck as bad as TDKR.
Think about it. Supe in chains? He’s the second strongest character in comic history( Thorn being #1). So how can mortals, unless they use kryptonite, contain him?
We old school fanboys know what’s going on. Supe in chains is a set up to lure Zod into a trap.
Plot holes can reveal story lines boys and girls.
Plot hole? Handcuffs on Supe is tantamount to adente penne pasta in great white’s mouth.
    Pah lease.

    • Marvellous

Do you know what “plot hole” even means?

    • tgritz

You really don’t know Supes do you???? Supes is most likely in cuffs because he LET them cuff him. He is trying to show he is a good guy by cooperating. Supes is and has always been a boy scout do gooder.

There is no feeling that this movie will kick ass. Do you remember when you saw the first iron Man trailer and were like Holy Shit this movie is going to be awesome. You don’t get that feeling for any of the promotional material they’ve released for this movie and the trailer was no better than the last Superman one.

    • Bob

When I first saw the Iron Man trailer I thought it was gonna be so awful, turns out it now happens to be one of my favorite movies so…

  • It\’s A Trap!

Ok ladies listen up. Just got off the phone with Mr. Crowe and from what I was able to make out he says this one’s gonna kill it and leave all you bitter fan boys happy. Christ some of you pathetic, man-boobed nancy boys might even hit the gym to emulate your new hero, Mr. Cavill’s impressive physique. So there you have it! Till it comes out, keep working on that awesome script you swear is so much better than anything else, and good luck getting the funding…….chumps!

    • Nolan is a worthless limey scumbag

Just cause cavill’s physique turns you on doesn’t mean it’ll be a good movie: fact.

    • pweef

Pshh whatchu talkin bout Henry Cavill needs to get like me.

  • sense 11

I CANT FUCKING WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE

I don’t understand all the negative thoughts some of you have about The Man Of Steel. How can you judge this movie before seeing it? So far, to me, it looks like a winner. My opinion. Cavill looks the part and he has the acting chops. Those of you who have complained that it should be an American playing the part are ridiculous. Did the French complain when Brando played Bonaparte? And more recently, why did Chris Hemsford play Thor? What made the writers opt for the English language as the langauge spoken on Asgard? Nobody complained about that. Eric Bana played the Hulk and Bana is Australian. Bruce Wayne, aka Batman is American, but another Australian, Christian Bale , portrayed the Caped Crusader. The point is, that many American actors have played other characters from foreign countries. Let’s give this complaint a rest. And when are you going to let these complaints about the Man Of Steel’s costume stop?. Some like it, some don’t. That’s it. When comments were made that Cavill having fake muscles under the costume, were quickly dismissed when the first picture of a shirtless Cavill popped up. . So, back to my original question. How can you judge The Man Of Steel and Henry Cavill before you see the movie? I’m going to make a prediction. All you naysayers will see The Man Of Steel more than once.

    • kingbadger

Just a slight note, Christian Bale was born in Wales…
