While the most recent theatrical trailer for director Zack Snyder’s Superman film Man of Steel delivered the goods visually, it also gave us our first preview of composer Hans Zimmer’s score for the film.  Crafting a new Superman theme was no small task as John Williams’ iconic theme will likely always be synonymous with the hero, but it was important for Zimmer to come up with something that solidified Man of Steel as a wholly new take on the character.  The result, as evidenced in the trailer and in this recently released full track (titled “An Ideal Hope”), is a magnificently pulsing theme that builds to a fantastic crescendo while bringing to mind the ascent of a hero like Superman from confused boy to Protector of Earth.

Hit the jump to listen to a full track from Hans Zimmer’s score, which is essentially an extended version of what we heard in the trailer, and click here to read the full details regarding the soundtrack release.  Man of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th, and Zimmer’s score will be released on June 11th.

    Magnificent.

    I came on my screen

I just read an article in the Hollywood Reporter saying that Nolan’s been coming to this website under the name “Nolan’s a whore” then he asks everyone if they can find him a Nolan impersonator to piss in his mouth while saying “Action” and offers to pay the guy $350 if he can make this piss taste like asparagus. What a twisted fuck Nolan is. No wonder he can’t make a good movie. This one will surely suck.

    • Know thyself

This is probably the dumbest thing I have read today. We all know that YOU are the one posting under the name “Nolan’s a whore.” Go away and troll somewhere else, you pathetic excuse for trash.

    • Spoon

HAHAHA! That was actually really funny. I mean you suck and all, but I did laugh

      • Spoon

Also, does anybody know if there is a Chris Nolan impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? I’d really like that, in fact, i’m pretty sure that it’ll be the best birthday ever! I’m willing to pay $300 cash. $350 if he can make it taste like asparagus.

      • Griz

Nolan you incorrigible…shouldn’t you be busy on Interstellar? You’re twisted. I like it. Put some of that weird energy into your movies and maybe they’ll be good.

    • Nate

      cool man.

  • GoreWhoreAust

This track title is not listed on either edition of the soundtrack. Is it actually from the film? I hope so, its a fantastic track and shows Mr. Zimmer has step away from the staples of his other Nolan related scores (Dark Knight, Inception, etc). Can any out clarify????

The song “Here For A Reason” had the same first 30 seconds as this, the trailer song, did. I don’t think Amazon has the clips up to listen to anymore, but it was exactly the same.

So good! It builds really nicely. Bodes really well for the rest of the score. Already pre-ordered btw.

IM3 was such a major disappointment. Man of Steel by all accounts should save the summer blockbuster spread. This track is merely a reinforcement of how good it will be.

    • The Blue Elephant

IM3 was a big letdown :( Really looking forward to Superman, if its stinks too, im really going to be bummed.

      • Joe

If MoS also bums out, it’ll be inconsolable. I was so looking forward to this summer feast only to start on a lame duck flick. In Nolan though, I trust.

        Go Superman!

    Amazing :)

Ive been humming the trailer music for about 2 weeks now, cant get it out of my head.

    • Joe

I’ve listened to this so many times that i’ve lost count!
Watched the trailer so many times, I lost count.
      Guess what?

Am gonna watch it again now! heh heh

    • Joseph M

How can you hum it? It doesn’t have a melody. If you can hum chords I’m well impressed :)

  • nathan

you should have used john williams theme for Superman and you should have used Danny Elfman’s theme for Batman, because you had no Batman theme, 3 movies and no theme?! Hans = pathetic.

    • Joseph M

While I agree that Zimmer’s crap at themes – and let’s remember that coming up with a simple melody that sticks in the minds of the masses is the hardest thing a composer can do – it’s unfair to call him pathetic. While he lacks melodic skills, he’s brilliant at creating mood and atmosphere. His Dark Knight score made me ignore all the film’s plot holes. However, he’s not right for Superman. That gig belongs to a classical composer, as opposed to a synth player.

it’s just the trailer music!??!??!?!?! we already heard this!!

  • No, no no no

This is not an official track, it is fan made. You can hear where someone tried to edit out the dialogue. Yes there are pieces of it on the soundtrack because this is from the score, but again, not an official put together track, just ripped trailer music…

Get your shit together Collider. (But thanks for sharing anyway, it is an awesome score).

  • Grayden

The trailer music and the song ” Here For A Reason” on the soundtrack share the same beginning, or what I would assume to be the beginning. So yes, the trailer music is on the soundtrack for what I can tell.

    What happened to the track?

  • Robb B.

Chills. Wow, I love how that piece builds and builds. Reminds me of the way the “Lighting of the Beacons” sequence in Return of the King just keeps getting grander and grander. Takes your breath away. Soundtrack pre-ordered!

That gave me chills! I am so glad they didn’t try to incorporate any of the old score like Singer. Don’t get me wrong the old score is one of my all time favorites. its right up there with JAWS etc., but it’s time to move on.

It’s good music, but not for a Superman film. Apart from Zimmer’s usual reliance on chords rather than melodies, it’s too slow. Superman’s about speed and flight and needs a faster tempo. Relax Williams, this music won’t be remembered in 35 years.
