First Trailer for MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM Starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris

     July 18, 2013

The Weinstein Company has released first trailer for director Justin Chadwick’s (The Other Boleyn Girl) biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.  The film stars Idris Elba and chronicles the life of Nelson Mandela from his childhood in a rural village to his election as president of South Africa.  Elba is unsurprisingly fantastic, and the pic actually looks to take on a pretty large scope when tackling Mandela’s story.  As far as biopics go, Long Walk to Freedom looks quite impressive.

So what’s peoples thoughts on Elba having a chance at an Oscar nomination? This could a pretty good year for minority actors at the Oscars with Twelve Years a Slave, The Butler, and Madela Long Walk to Freedom coming this year. I’m pretty sure Ejiofor will get a Oscar nomination and most likely either Elba or Whitaker. Both could get Nomination nods but all three of them will have to be amazing for that to happen. I dont remember the last time 3 minority actors were nominated.

That’s a good question. I can see Ejiofor and Whitaker getting nominated. I’m not sure about Elba. I think he’s a great actor and based on the trailer I think his performance may be Oscar-worthy, but I’m not sure if this film and it’s production team can/will campaign enough for it. It’s sad, but it seems like these days your production company has to push hard in order to get nominations instead of the performances speaking for themselves. I may be wrong, though – it would be pretty crazy and cool if all three got a nod.

It’s coming out in November and it’s by The Weinstein Company so there will definitely be a push for it at he Oscars. You can count on that I’m pretty sure.

The problem is that I’m almost 100% positive the Academy will not nominate 3 minority actors. Maybe 2, and Ejiofor looks like he’s a lock for a nomination IMHO. Then even though The Butler looks like it can be a little cheesy/biased like say “The Help”, but also like “The Help”, it looks like it’s going to have some great performances, specifically Forest Whitaker. And then with Mandela, Elba looks like he nails the role perfectly even more than Morgan Freeman. So it’s going to be a battle this year because you can’t forget about Fassbender in The Counselor, DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street, Cumberbatch in Fifth Estate, or McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club

I also forgot that Tom Hanks is back this year as a serious contender with two star vehicles this year in the form of Saving Mr. Banks and Captain Phillips,

Elba seems to have nailed the part down cold. Only problem I have with the trailer is the last line. My nephew asked me why Mandela was quoting Bane. Took me ages to wipe my drink off my monitor and explain the difference between a real person and a fictional character.
