(500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb may be taking over for Sam Raimi on the Spider-Man reboot. Sources say that Webb met with Spider-Man’s producers in an effort to possibly get production underway for a Summer 2012 release date. The overly lengthy timeframe is most likely due in part to the fact Sony is looking to shoot Spider-Man in 3D.
Find out more about why Webb may be a good and bad choice for the director’s chair after the jump.
While Webb may come as an unconventional choice, especially against names such as James Cameron and David Fincher, Sony was impressed with Webb’s direction of young people in (500) Days of Summer. This, of course, plays out well for the script by Jamie Vanderbilt in which Peter Parker is back in high school. This is the good part.
The downside (for some fans anyway) to all this is that it may further confirm that Sony is looking for a younger demographic for the next run on Spider-Man. By focusing on a story that puts Peter in high school I imagine they will bring in other characters such as Flash Thompson and Eddie Brock (who ultimately becomes Venom) to flesh out the cast. Yes, it pains me to make the comparison, but Spider-Man is starting to sound a little like Twilight.
Adding to this is the fact the recent cartoon series; The Spectacular Spider-Man also portrays Parker in high school. Granted, while nothing has been confirmed as of yet, all signs are pointing to a younger take on the character instead of an older one. Frustrating, I know, but at least it’s better than watching Spider-Man in a movie adaption Marvel’s The Super Hero Squad Show.

I'll have to check out his 500 Days of Summer movie. If they are introducing Eddie this early and setting the movie in high school then I can see this movie looking a lot like Ultimate Spider-Man which for the most part was a good series.
This reboot sucks, but given what might've happened if SM4 went forward, it's probably a good thing. Still on the fence about the whole thing. Now, if they can get someone to portray a good Peter Parker/Spider-Man & Mary Elizabeth Winstead to be MJ, we'll have 2 good main roles filled…or at least the MJ role.
..but there won't be a SM4
I am stunned by how much has been automatically assumed about this project with absolutely nothing to back it up.
Here is the Michael Fleming story that, as far as I can tell, is the most up-to-date news regarding the Spider-Man reboot:
http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/will-sony-spi…
In it, we learn a few things…
-James Cameron, David Fincher, Wes Anderson, and Marc Webb make up the studio's wish list, and as Webb isn't nearly the “name” director the others are, he's rising quickly to the top of their list.
-It will be set in high school, and that perspective is just as, if not more important, than the action sequences.
-Sony really wants 3D.
-James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC) wrote the script.
The only discouraging thing in there is that Sony might insist on 3D when the director would rather not use that. I haven't heard one official mention of Eddie Brock, Venom, or a Twilight-mood. While I don't doubt that Sony has interests in those areas, their commitment to emotions over action sounds incredibly positive, Vanderbilt is a very talented writer, and movies about young people aren't always bad. I've yet to hear a single thing about this project, outside of assumptions made on sites like this, that automatically makes me worry.
500 days of summer is a great film so not a bad choice for the director. If Sony does decide to move towards the high school Spider-man, using Ultimate Spider-man as a source and talking to Bendis are requirements. If the origin is included again, lets hope that its as short as possible b/c Spiderman 1 already did the origin and it would be painful watching another film so soon after that dealt with basically the same story points.
You guys act like Twilight invented the supernatural high school angst subgenre. I'm pretty sure Buffy got them beat by a few years. But of course, using that analogy would go against the unfounded panic the article wants to portray.
3-D does suck.
A Spider-man directed by David Fincher would be really interesting.
Do some people not know spidey's history? From 1963-65, stan lee wrote him as a high school student. Why is it anytime they put the character back in high school (spectacular spider-man), the assumption is that it will be like ultimate spiderman or appeal to the kids? I'm not saying it's not a possibility, but stan lee didn't create spidey as an adult. The appeal, was that for the first time, a high school kid was the main star of the book, not the sidekick.
“…that it may further confirm that Sony is looking for a younger demographic for the next run on Spider-Man” by dumping Tobey Maguire because he's too old and Sam Raimi because he said it was a stupid idea to back date Spiderman and fire Tobey removes any aspect of doubt from a reader's mind that it is EXACTLY what Sony is doing. Laura Ziskin, you are oftentimes brilliant in your ability to tune into the zeitgeist but this move is, for lack of better words, foible.
The reason I bring up Ultimate is because the article mentions introducing Eddie, who was introduced early in the Ultimate series.
For those who haven't seen (500) Days of Summer. you must see it now. It is the best indie movie to be released since Donnie Darko, an amazing drama film with a nice pinch of comedy, as well as the best soundtrack I've heard in a movie in a long time (of course its my music taste: Dinosaur Jr, The Smiths, Pixies, etc). With the addition of this director this “reboot” may have a chance, somehow I doubt that either this director or James Vanderbilt would sign on to a film to be styled after Twilight. I have some respect for both of these creators, I think saying that this points towards Twilight is a bit drastic and there is no evidence to support that conclusion.
The question is whether these creators will bring something new to an already dried up franchise. Imagine rebooting Star Trek a few years after the last movie was released, people haven't had time to forget the Spiderman trilogy and releasing a movie this early is a bit risky.
Either way I won't be passing judgment on the film until I see a synopsis and maybe some actor creds or a trailer, then we can start making predictions.
Yeah we also all know they won't ever get Cameron, that's somebodies over-active imagination. Cameron is set on a few trilogy productions of his own and there's no way hes going to hop into a new Spiderman movie when hes already in the process of fleshing out 2 more Avatar movies and a Battle Angel film (as well as who knows what hes got up his sleeve).
I was on the internet and i saw that they are making Spider Man 4 and they are still thinking about who is going to be the next villain. Here are some options Carnage, Lizard, Kingpin, Jackal, Scorpion, Rhino, Electro, Vulture, Kraven The Hunter, Shocker, Morlun, Mysterio, Chameleon. Have Fun!!!!! And choose wisely.

I can't believe that they're restarting the series. Just when the Spider-Man movies looked to be going in a good direction, this happens. Now they'll have to start all over, same old origin story, same villains, back to the high school, same story we've seen time and time again. And I was looking forward to Carnage and Lizard
