Marion Cotillard in Talks to Join THE DARK KNIGHT RISES [UPDATED]

File this under rumor for now, but Marion Cotillard may be joining the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises after all. Le Figaro, France’s oldest and second largest newspaper, is reporting that Cotillard has signed on to join Nolan’s third Batman film. This is quite surprising news, given that just last month Cotillard announced she was pregnant, seemingly taking her out of the running for any role in Dark Knight Rises. However, the actress is due in May, and with the film shooting from May until November, there could be ample time for her to recover and appear in the film after all. The report is in French, but Batman News (who brought the story to our attention) translated the article as follows:

“The actress, who is expecting a child in the spring with Guillaume Canet, will be scarce this year. She’ll do a single film and her choice fell on Batman 3.”

The newspaper appears to be legit, and not simply a tabloid. There may, in fact, be some truth to this. Cotillard turned in a brilliant performance in Nolan’s Inception, and one would assume that she’d be eager to work with him again. Could Talia al Ghul be in the film after all? Nothing’s been officially confirmed, and this could very well turn out to simply be a rumor, but it sure would be fantastic if it turns out to be true. The Dark Knight Rises is slated for a July 20th, 2012 release. [Update: A representative for Cotillard tells THR that the actress is "in discussions, but nothing has been confirmed yet."]

There is ALWAYS room for Marion Cotillard in any movie, especially The Dark Knight Rises. Bale, Caine, Freeman, Oldman, Hardy, Hathaway, Gordon-Levitt, and now Marion Cotillard… that would be spectacular. Christopher Nolan always assembles an all-star cast for his films, and for THAT we thank you.

The second speculated female role that in reality doesn’t exist! WOOHOOO!

Can’t you fuckers cover a movie that deserves coverage, like Power of the Dark Crystal?? Nut-heads. This is a general comment to the movie nerd-net and their stupid casting agency sources.

  3. Infinitemonkey @

Now, all they need is to cast Leonardo di Caprio and the whole will be set. LOL!

Oh, and of course, Ken Watanabe.

    • Grimcicle @

Watanabe has already been in a Nolan Batfilm.

      • Michael D'Angelo @

It would be interesting if Ken Watanabe came back, as Ra’s Al Ghul is immortal, no?
And he wouldn’t be a wimp, unlike the character of Lau in Dark Knight.

      • Adam @

@Michael D’Angelo, Ken Watanabe was not Ra’s Al Ghul in Batman Begins. He was just a decoy for the real Ra’s Al Ghul– Liam Neeson. You sure you watched the movie?

      • Michael D'Angelo @

@Adam, yes, I’m sure I did see it, thanks for asking

Movies that are fictional can be twisted, changed, rearranged to have whatever in it, and we are talking about a movie about a guy who dresses up as a Bat, one that’s based on comic books and graphic novels.

So, if Nolan wanted Watanabe in it, he can tweak things to make it work. Movies are made here in the real world, everything within a movie is just details and making it work. Regardless of how realistic Nolan’s movies are, they’re still implausible and couldn’t happen in the real world without huge stretches and leaps of faith.

      • Adam @

@Michael D’Angelo: Wow, thanks for explaining that to me. I had no idea movies were fictional and made in the real world. The point you seem to be missing is that there is internal consistency even within fictional realities. Imagine what kind of ridiculousness we’d be stuck with if writers/film makers could bring any/every character from the dead randomly every time they decided to do a sequel or to take the story in a new direction. You don’t think that would kinda suck? Just recycle/rehash/revive any time? Just ’cause it’s fiction? Really? I mean geez, it’s bad enough that everything seems to be a reboot/remake these days. It baffles me that your response seems to suggest you believe that just because its a “fictional reality” any and everything goes. Thank goodness it doesn’t work like that and I guess thank goodness for the rest of us you’re not helming TDKR. :/

      • Michael D'Angelo @

        You’re very welcome.

You’re talking this all too seriously.

        Why so serious?

      • Adam @

You’re quite mistaken, I don’t think this is “serious” at all. It just seems ridiculous that you were suggesting “anything goes” in fiction. I have friends who share that same opinion, I think its ignorant and I heartily disagree, that’s all. It’s all good here. I’m looking forward to TDKR as much as anyone and I trust Nolan will do right by the fans. ;-)

      • Michael D'Angelo @

Well, I don’t think my explanation’s ignorant, but you’re entitled to your opinion. And I shall agree to disagree.
But, anyway, at the end of the day, we’re all Dark Knight fans, and I, like just about everyone else, is looking forward to what Nolan pulls out of his hat.
        I hope Ken Watanabe’s in it. :P

      • Gotham Kid @

Firstly, to those arguing over Ras Al Ghul, … Ken Watanabi WAS Ras al Ghul!!! Liam Neeson became Ras al Ghul, after Ken was killed. In the film its stated that “Ras al Ghul” translated as “Head of the demon” aka Boss!

This is Nolans realistic take on a character that in the comics is immortal. Instead the name has been passed down the line for thousands of years. Metaphorically immortal. .. So the question is… Did YOU watch the movie?

Re Cottilard, why all the drooling? She looks almost as bland as Maggie gylenhal and Holmes. And those chanting for her to play Catwoman? STFU!

Wonder why every female in Nolans films has dark hair and a similar look. Boring choice of female leads in all. Of all the stunning and tallented actresses in movies too.

      • Adam @

@Gotham Kid: *sigh* From Nolan’s official shooting script, p. 107 (in the copy I have) if you must check:

        WAYNE
        You’re not Ra’s Al Ghul. He’s dead.

The Society Dame laughs nervously, confused.

        VOICE (O.S.)
But is Ra’s Al Ghul immortal..?

Wayne TURNS. Standing there. Smiling. Ducard.

        DUCARD
        Are his methods supernatural..?

        ***WAYNE***
        (understanding)
Or cheap parlor tricks to conceal
        your trues identity… Ra’s?

***Ducard (THE REAL RA’S AL GHUL) smiles acknowledgment***

        DUCARD/RA’S AL GHUL
Surely you don’t begrudge me dual
        identities?

Ra’s Al Ghul walks Wayne through the dwindling party.

        RA’S AL GHUL
I’ve been admiring your work, even
as it’s interfered with my plans…

Ra’s Al Ghul looks at Wayne with a tinge of sadness.

Sorry about the formatting; I put asterisks*** to draw your attention. I did not edit anything. Nolan WROTE INTO HIS SCRIPT Bruce realizing HE WAS DECEIVED and identifies, in his own words, that Ducard is ***THE REAL RA’S AL GHUL.*** This was Nolan’s intention for his movie version. This was a discussion bout NOLAN’S MOVIE, not a discussion encompassing external knowledge of the Batman comics universe.

That’s like someone arguing that someone is wrong to say Joker’s face is white because he’s wearing make-up in The Dark Knight, instead claiming he fell into a vat of toxic waste just because the whole “chemical” thing has been in numerous Joker story lines in the comics; But in Nolan’s interpretation of THE MOVIE, we all know its make-up. :-/ In Nolan’s interpretation of BB, Liam Neeson was deliberately concealing his identity as Ra’s. Maybe you missed that? :-/

    • Dane @

Watanabe flash backs. JGL as the Riddler, DiCaprio as Azrael, Marion as Talia, Ellen Page as Robin (For a change of pace.) that would be Kick-Ass

  4. dine @

If so we definitely NEED Ellen Page to be in the movie as well! ;)

  5. Tommyk123123 @

I could have seen her as Catwoman.

    • Michael D'Angelo @

She was my personal choice to play Catwoman, long before they announced Anne Hathaway. Seeing how she acted in Inception, I thought she was perfect. But then, a couple months ago, I heard she was pregnant. I was really disappointed, so I’ll accept her in any role in the movie.
I read that she was the first choice to play Catwoman. That’s really too bad they had to settle for Anne Hathaway. She better not screw it up, or she’ll be Nolan’s third bad choice in a row for the lead female actress.

      • Yahzee Skellington @

No doubt she would’ve been brilliant as Catwoman, BUT that character might be too close to what she did in Inception.

P.S. I wish Collider would separate rumors like this, from real news, that way, if we want to be amused or discuss possibilities we’d have a place, but we’d also know where to find the true stuff.

P.S. P.S. I still DON’T like Anne Hathaway, but as we (almost) all agree IN NOLAN WE TRUST…

  6. mylifeisent @

Where’s Ellen Page? Not complete without her!

  7. a.j. @

it’s always good to see cotilliard, but this movie is starting to feel more crowed than the avengers or first class…just call di caprio and page, already.

    • a.j. @

      crowded, sorry…

      • Mike @

To be fair, Nolan’s films have included many ensemble casts who’ve gotten their share of good presence. Especially Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Inception.

      • Greg @

I agree a.j. In order to give Christian Bale enough face time as both bruce wayne and batman, this movie is going to have to be 3 hours yawn…oh, excuse me, long. Honestly, once I heard riddler or penguin wouldn’t be the main villian, and that anne hathaway would be catwoman, I lost all enthusiasm for this movie.

      • Clayton @

Bale already split time with Dent and the Joker and TDK. Nobody expected Dent to have such big role, but the film was clearly split three ways and I don’t think anyone had a problem with how it turned out.

  8. Migz13 @

    Whoa?! Another casting?!
TDKR sure is turning out to be a movie with a super stellar cast:D
Marion has actually been one of my personal faves to play catwoman aside from eva green. I think both of them have the beauty and acting caliber to do the role justice:D

I lolled at some of the comments about casting ellen page and leonardo di caprio as well. hahaha! The movie’s budget would destroy the effing roof!!
Ellen page as batgirl?! Leonardo Di Caprio as Azazel?! ROFLMAO

  9. Grimcicle @

Marion Cotillard as Silver St. Cloud.

  10. HugoStrange @

This is turning out to be an all-star pull-out-all-the-stop epic-of-all-epics that anyone can dream of ! NOLAN YOU STUD ! RESPECT!

  11. Merlin @

She could be batgirl, catwoman, or DC Comic’s most beloved Lesbian: BatWoman!
