If there’s one thing we love here at Limited Paper, it’s caffeine. But if there are several other things that we love, they are—in no particular order—anything even tangentially associated with Batman (especially charities), Chris Nolan, The Dark Knight Rises, artist Joey Vetoe, the artwork of Mark Englert, Gallery 1988, AMC’s Breaking Bad, and any and all posters based on AMC’s Breaking Bad.
Coincidentally enough, caffeine is the driving force behind today’s installment of Limited Paper…which also happens to contain all the other things we just expressed our undying love for. Find out what we’re going on about after the jump, folks.
What’s this? Three new installments of Limited Paper in under 24 hours? I know what you’re thinking, and yes, we don’t get paid enough here at LPHQ. But we’re not here to focus on Limited Paper’s North Korean prison-camp-style working conditions: we’re here to talk about bad-assery in the world of limited edition screenprints. And it just so happens that we’ve got a double-dose of badass posters to share with you this afternoon: one of which is a charity piece based on Chris Nolan’s recently-released The Dark Knight Rises, the other of which is a Mark Englert joint based on AMC’s Breaking Bad.
You can see why we’re excited.
JOEY VETOE GETS CHARITABLE FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE DARK KNIGHT RISES/AURORA SHOOTING
If you’ve been anywhere near a television over the past two weeks, then there’s a good chance that you’ve heard all about the tragic shooting in Aurora, CO, the one that unfolded at the midnight premiere of Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Now, I’m the type of cat that believes dudes like (insert name of douchebag Aurora shooter here) do the things they do because A) they’re insane and B) they want that sweet, sweet media attention, so I’m not going to rehash the details of that unfortunate incident here (nor will I give the douche-that-shall-not-be-named the satisfaction of having his name typed out for the millionth time).
Instead, let’s focus on Joey Vetoe, and the awesome Dark Knight Rises giclee print he’s created, pictured below:
- The Dark Knight Rises by Joey Vetoe
- $30 limited giclee edition of 125
Vetoe reached out to Limited Paper earlier today, and explained that he’s selling 125 copies of this giclee via his store over at this page. Not only is this a great piece, but it’s going to a great cause: every dollar earned after printing costs will go to benefit the victims of the Aurora shooting (Vetoe wanted me to point out that you can use coupon code “VETOE20” to get 20% off, but even then the full amount—minus shipping—will be going to the victims). I asked the artist to give us a quick rundown on the production of the print and his thoughts on the film, and here’s what he had to say:
When I woke up that Saturday morning and saw the news of the shooting, it was like a punch in the gut. Your heart just immediately goes out to the victims and their families. I mean those people were just people like us, excited about seeing Batman return to the big screen. It was hard to feel excited about going, and– after seeing it– I had mixed emotions. But I can’t help but think a little of that was because of what happened at the theater in aurora. How could not be in the back of your mind? The next few days I thought about the victims and the things I could to do to help in some small way. This seemed like a logical thing to do, and will hopefully help a little. The people that buy it will know that their money is going to a good cause and as a bonus they get a pretty decent Dark Knight poster.
As for the print itself, Vetoe told me that, “…the effect was almost a lucky accident: I was half done with the sketch when I stepped back and took a look at it and I thought the effect almost gave the impression of something smoldering. I decided that there was something more interesting about only seeing half of his face and it kind of went along with that image you see of Bane carrying that broken cowl.” We tend to agree, and suggest that you head on over to Vetoe’s Etsy page—which has a number of other kick-ass posters on offer, if you’re in the buying mood– to make your donation/pick up your copy of this super-limited Dark Knight Rises print immediately.
GALLERY 1988 MAKES MARK ENGLERT BREAK BAD
Just as exciting as Vetoe’s for-charity Dark Knight Rises print is this bit of news: Gallery1988 has continued their work with Limited Paper-favorite artist Mark Englert, and they’ve done so in a way that I don’t think any of us saw coming—via their ongoing Breaking Bad poster series! Let’s get right to it, shall we?
- The White Residence by Mark Englert
- $60 limited edition of 300 (200 sold online)
If you’ve been with us from the beginning here at Limited Paper, you know that we’ve been big cheerleaders for Mark’s work since our very inception: we named him our first-ever “Thing Worth Getting Excited About”, and just last week we ran our second interview piece with him in the wake of Gallery1988’s Comic-Con release of You Are My Lucky Star (see below for more on that one). We were really excited to hear that Mark was getting involved with G88’s Breaking Bad series, and The White Residence does not disappoint: if you look closely, you’ll be able to pick out some of the cool little “easter eggs” that Mark’s work has become known for.
There’s no GID, sadly, but we’re guessing that plenty of Mark’s future releases will contain more of the GID-wizardry that he’s known for. Speaking of Mark’s future releases, I asked him for an update on the You Are My Lucky Star variant above (in case you’ve forgotten, the Comic-Con exclusive version—which featured a yellow/orange-ish background versus the blue-greenish version pictured above—already went on sale and sold out at the Con; the variant edition will have a higher edition size and has been slated for online sale at some point in the future), and here’s what he had to say:
The ALIEN variant is being printed right now and should be in my hands for signing/numbering very early august… when it goes on sale is up to Gallery 1988, but I don’t imagine they’d wait very long to put it on sale.
So, ya heard it here first, folks: Englert’s You Are My Lucky Star variant will be in his GID-covered hands sometime soon, numbered and signed, and should be popping up online for sale via the Gallery 1988 website shortly thereafter. And something tells me this isn’t the last thing we’re going to be seeing from Mark Englert in the next few months, so stay tuned to Limited Paper for more as it becomes available/printable/what-have-you.
As always, if you’re an artist with some prints you’d like to show off, a gallery with a show you’d like to announce, or just some random poster-fiend with a red-hot bit of gossip about an upcoming piece, you can always reach us via LimitedPaper@Gmail.com (you should also hold onto your britches, socks, panties, and all other undergarments for Tweets from @LimitedPaper, the newly-launched Twitter feed for all your screenprint- needs: follow us now, damn it! We may just follow ya back). Everyone else is encouraged to sound off in the comments section below…and, as per usual, to stay tuned for more from the world o’ screenprints in the very near future.
