Mark Ruffalo Signs On to Play Hulk in THE AVENGERS

Surprising no one that has kept up with the near Marvel snafu that was the nixing of Edward Norton, Deadline reports that Mark Ruffalo has signed on the dotted line to play Hulk in the upcoming mega-film The Avengers. Of course, nothing is official, but tomorrow is the day that many say we will see the full cast of The Avengers appear in a “surprise” reveal at San Diego Comic-Con. Yesterday, Joss Whedon confirmed that he will direct The Avengers during his panel with J.J. Abrams at the Con. The dominoes are all lined up for a huge event at Marvel’s big day in Hall H. For more on the story to this point, hit the jump.

Marvel had a falling out with Edward Norton just a few weeks before Comic-Con, and many felt that all was lost. Here was a top-notch actor that had a love for the character and could match the presence of any other actor sharing the screen with him. Considering Robert Downey Jr. is playing Iron Man, this is a key to whoever replaces Norton. Just a few days after the crushing news of Norton’s ousting from the role, we reported that Ruffalo was in “late-stage talks” to fill those mighty purple pants. Now it appears that everything has fallen into place and only a few hours separate us from knowing, once and for all, who the entire cast will be. The Avengers is set for release on May 4th, 2012. Stay tuned for more as we get it.

I love Edward Norton but this is his fault, fucking acting like a pre-madonna instead of playing ball and pleasing the fans., Selfish Bastard. I think hes a “my way or the highway” type of guy. Should of never signed on to do the original hulk, he knew what the Avengers plan was from the beginning. Im fucking pist at him.

Mark Ruffalo is going to do a great job tho, we just have to disregard yet another Hulk movie, sigh

We don't have to disregard the film, it's already tied into continuity through both Downey at the end of the films itself and background reports in Iron Man 2. All you have to do is accept a new face instead of Norton's.

isnt the plot about the skrulls using the Hulk to reak havoc so we wont even see bruce banner most of the movie just the CGI green guy

Still not pleased with Marvel's handling of Norton. Others are easy to knock on Norton for hearsay, but a “pre-madonna” wouldn't handle the news in the way Norton has. It would be quite the opposite. He didn't go blow-for-blow with Feige's official statement–rather, it was very complimenting and professional–so the glossing over of Feige's shortage of tact to uphold a label on Norton is a bit of a double standard. If you don't like Norton, you don't like Norton, but don't turn a blind eye when someone else is acting the way you have associate with Norton.

But whatever. Initial sign Marvel might be just like all the other studios. No problem with Ruffalo, but I'd rather it have been a purer backdrop for him to get the role.

Actually, I'm picturing this could get very entertaining, very quickly.

We might finally have a Banner who we can laugh along with, as he whines & complains about always turning into the Jolly Green Man, & wondering what he did last night…

This could be the Robert Downey equivalent of finally making the character entertaining for the screen.

Norton's take was serious & I kind of enjoyed it. Ruffalo's take will almost definitely be different, and quite possibly hilarious.

I'm just wondering if he auditioned for this, or if Marvel's just offering acting gigs on sight alone.

Good point. I mean, Ruffalo does kinda look like Hulk–not Bruce Banner, just Hulk. The movie will be packed with characters to develop and many different plots to conjoin to spend a lot of time with the Banner persona. I'm personally intrigued by how they're going to make Thor match the rest of the realistic-ish, sci-fi-based plots of the other movies. But that's off-topic (right now, anyway). Point is, Ruffalo's casting might not be that bad. Only time will tell.

I would rather have no Bruce Banner than this loser. Just have a cgi hulk and loose Banner all together
