At the press conference yesterday for Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming Oscar contender The Fighter, the star let his thoughts on M. Night Shyamalan’s disaster movie (get it?) The Happening be known, and thankfully we can now rest assured that he is, in fact, sane and does understand how terrible the film really was. In discussing meeting with his Fighter co-star Amy Adams previously, Wahlberg said:
We had actually had the luxury of having lunch before to talk about another movie and it was a bad movie that I did. She dodged the bullet. And then I was still able to … I don’t want to tell you what movie … alright “The Happening.” Fuck it. It is what it is. Fucking trees, man. The plants. Fuck it. You can’t blame me for not wanting to try to play a science teacher. At least I wasn’t playing a cop or a crook.
It’s refreshing to see an actor in Hollywood man-up and actually tell the truth for once. As I was watching The Happening, I remember sitting there and having an argument in my head as to whether they were actually playing it straight or if the flick was supposed to be cheesy. I kept thinking, there’s no way that Shyamalan believes that this is good. Absolutely no way. And then The Last Airbender opened…

An honest man.
i still believe Shyamalan will come back to his sixth sense form someday. i was one of the few who liked The Village. sure some of the dialogue are really really dull. but it was beautifully shot by Deakins, and M Night knows how to play with his audience. then Lady in the water, and some other movies came.
but i still believe he’ll be back on his top form someday. whether it will be because he will get a co-writer or adapt something, i do not know.
miracles do happen
Maybe… Maybe not. The Village was in my opinion a pretty decent movie, the major problem with the movie wasn’t the movie itself but the ending. If it turned out that the creatures were real that would’ve been epic.
I was having such an awful day… until now hahaha
The thing about The Happening is that there was a halfway decent premise there that was executed horribly.
Still needs to come clean about MAX PAYNE……
hmm what about spiderman, a kid gets bit by a spider. Toby???
Seriously, you’re going to diss Spidermans premise?
Are you an idiot man? =|, seriously?
The Happening had an excellent premise, but was executed so poorly
If he could admit that HE sucked in that movie (and Max Payne and Shooter and others), then I’d be impressed. It’s not the plants’ fault his acting was awful. Sure, I know the director has a lot to do with it (Wahlberg gives great performances when he’s being directed by, you know, Scorsese)… eh, who am I kidding? The Happening fails on so many levels.
Agreed. It’d be refreshing if he admitted that he sucked donkey dicks in that movie.
The Happening is a great movie, thats main idea just went over everybodys head.
The Happening was 1,000 times better than Skyline.
I was really disappointed to hear him say this, I’m a big Wahlberg fan and I actually thought The Happening was effective and unfairly slated. For those who don’t like the guy, watch The Other Guys – genius.

Come on The Happening was one of the worst acted and worst directed pieces of trash in the last decade. Wahlberg is a pretty good actor, and I agree he was the most fun thing about The Other Guys; but to say The Happening doesn’t deserve to be called hollywood madness is just ludicrous.
“The Happening was one of the worst acted and worst directed pieces of trash in the last decade.”
Gee, hyperbolize much?
Haven’t seen The Happening, but The Last Airbender was absolutely atrocious…

I like Wahlberg and feel he shouldnt get the blame for THE HAPPENING. He isnt totally realistic as a school teacher but he was hardly the worst thing about that movie.
For what its worth MAX PAYNE could have been really badass but the direction sucks and the studio’s decision to go PG 13 ultimately killed that movie. Can wait for Wahlberg to get a real role like that of the Departed and let him roll with it.
M Night however keeps using up the good faith that he gets from THE SIXTH SENSE. However I think because that movie was such a shocker movies like UNBREAKABLE and THE VILLAGE go under the radar. Both UNBREAKABLE and THE VILLAGE were pretty good movies and know they get shafted because they arent the SIXTH SENSE.
LADY IN THE WATER may be the worst movie ever though (next to skyline) and he needs to something good to make up for airbender and Water….Airbender has such a cool premise that he fumbles with.. even the deleted scences show how off track he really was with that movie.
agree with Kbsesg. Mark did his best in Max Payne… Director John Moore killed it with over direction and too many tedious moments…and a poor script. The action in the movie was actually really good…especially in the last 20 mins
True, the last 20 min of the movie was pretty good. It was terribly executed, I blame that movie for ruining a possible relationship lol. We were having a great date until the movie, then it all fell to pieces. :]

Well I respect Wallberg, but what has happened here? Has he made so much money he CAN burn bridges? A severe no-no in any business. Or has he so much money now that he has no regard for artistic expression other than his own and doesn’t care who he disses? Not cool. Not cool at all. If anything his little soft spoken portrayal of the science teacher was cheesy, the actual content of the movie was interesting. We can understand if MW has no head for science, but have a head for business and don’t diss an entire movie, it’s director, all producers involved and invested in the film, etc. Have some respect, if not for your own image- admitting what you perceive as a mis-step, than for everyone involved in that movie.
Shyamalan is that you?
What does it matter. Nobody in Hollywood honestly believes the movie was good, it won’t be making anymore money anymore. IT isn’t like the guy made fun of the movie on opening weekend. Are you going to fault Bill Murray for his Garfield jokes in Zombieland? I didn’t think so.
Go away with your Hollywood PC bs.

In other news, Andy Dick has admitted he likes men.
I enjoyed the Happening. I didnt know anything about it before I saw it and was surprised it was fairly interesting.
Then I read all the internet hate about the film and I respectfully disagree. I scored it slightly above average.
above average to what? The 200th episode of Pokemon?

@UltimateMan – Pretty much my position exactly. Nice not to enter a film prejudiced sometimes isn’t it?

what? Since it didn’t have a sex scene or show naked women, is this why it sucked? It was a good movie and I watched it twice. What do you guys consider good anymore? Any movie that shows any type of nudity sucks…you will all burn in hell if you don’t repent and ask for forgiveness and ask jesus into your heart. And when you die and your burning, you will remember of this warning and it will be to late.
You’re hot.
You mean, ‘too’ late, you crazy fool! When i die, i, along with you, will be worm food; difficult to repent when your mouth is full of soil!
shut the hell up. keep ur religious bullcrap to ur self

I think the sixth sense was a stolen project that M. night stole from a best friend that was in his really early works thats why that was the only good movie he ever made take alook at the evidence. the Last Airbender is the worst movie of all times and alll though i believe in miracles i don’t want m. night shyamalanadingdong coming back he peed and crapped all over me and my families face ruinning a beatifully executed animated series i hope his kids hate his guts and that his wife divorces his ass he needs to be alone and think about what he’s done.
Thats his opinon. I think THE HAPPENING was an intersting movie. Maybe that was me because I liked horror and it was one of them.
guess what i loved all your films i liked the happening to and why because its diffrent but its interesting aswell and yano in some kinda plant it must be totally to think that there isnt a plant on human grounds that doesnt do this i love the film ;-}
I think that after watching a brilliant actor like Mark Wahlberg be thrown to the wolves in this awful, boring, slow moving, uninventive movie I will HAVE to kill myself!!!!!!
