Mark Wahlberg Confirmed as the New Lead in TRANSFORMERS 4, Plus a New Logo for the Film

     November 8, 2012

So after the back-and-forth of whether or not Mark Wahlberg would be involved in Michael Bay’s Transformers 4, it looks as if it’s finally been confirmed.  Previously, we reported that Bay was in talks with Wahlberg to star in Transformers 4, but Bay took to his blog to squash that rumor, saying that the Pain and Gain duo were in talks for another picture.  With the internet all abuzz over the possibilities, Bay said that the chatter caused him to dream up a part for the star.  Now it looks like it’s going to happen as Bay confirmed Wahlberg’s been cast as the lead on his blog today.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (November 8, 2012) – After an exceptionally successful collaboration on the upcoming “Pain and Gain,” Michael Bay has cast Academy Award®-nominee Mark Wahlberg in the highly anticipated “TRANSFORMERS 4.” The film will hit theaters June 27th, 2014.

“Mark is awesome. We had a blast working on “Pain and Gain” and I’m so fired up to be back working with him. An actor of his caliber is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers’ legacy,” said Bay.

Bay will direct the next installment in the “TRANSFORMERS” series, which begins shooting next spring. From Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom, Inc., in association with Hasbro, the film will be produced by Don Murphy & Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Ian Bryce, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Bay, Brian Goldner and Mark Vahradian.

Bay’s first “TRANSFORMERS” film was a box office sensation in 2007, opening at #1 and earning more than $700 million worldwide. His second installment “TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN” in 2009 grossed more than $830 million worldwide. In 2011, “TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON” was an even bigger hit worldwide, grossing more than a billion dollars to become the 5th highest grossing film of all time. To date, the franchise has earned more than $2.6 billion worldwide.

From acclaimed director Michael Bay comes “Pain and Gain,” a new action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie. Based on the unbelievable true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong. Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson, and Bar Paly also star. The film is based on magazine articles by Pete Collins, with a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and produced by Donald DeLine, Michael Bay and Ian Bryce.

“PAIN AND GAIN” opens in theaters everywhere April 26th, 2013.

Glad Sthatam stayed away from this, he is in an unique streak of awesome movies in my humble opinion, it would be shameful if he added true garbage to his filmography.

    • Roy

      Best comment.

Sadly, the only good Transformers movie is the animated on from the 80s… Oh great. now I got “The Touch” stuck in my head.

      • J.R.

Funny you said that, i ve been thinking about that movie (80´s TF) for the past week i dont know why? it just brings great memories and ive been hearing “The Touch” too this days!! crazy huh? I just hope that the new movie (TF4) help bring a remastered release in blu of the 80s movie, and Yeah! Michael Bay $ucks!

    • Nate H

I agree that this movie has a slim chance of success, but I have to disagree with the Statham comment. I love Statham in the Transporter, Snatch, the Italian Job, and movies of that nature; he’s made a LOT of crappy films, though. Take a look at his actor list on IMDb – lots of atrocious stuff on there. Transformers would not be outside his wheelhouse.

    • LEM

I like Statham but come on he has a few piles of crap in his filmography.

  • Strong Enough

Should have went with Idris Elda and made it about racism in the south

    • Cat San

Or go with Jackie Chan and make it about knock off robots in China.

  • ScaredForMovies

All the chatter caused him to dream up a part for Wahlberg? I just don’t believe you Michael Bay. What about when you lied about making Transformers 4. That’s pretty recent. I also think you were lying about the terrible Ninja Turtles script that was leaked. I read a synopsis and with the military angle it sure seemed like a Bay movie. I can understand the appeal of Michael Bay to a mass audience and you can’t deny that he’s made bank with this franchise. But Bayformers just isn’t for me. And Marky Mark just isn’t gonna change that.

    • Straymo

We are still referring to Mark Wahlberg as Marky Mark in 2012? Even though he’s going to be in this movie, I think he’s proved he’s capable of deserving more respect than that silly reference.

      twas a good song tho.

      • ScaredForMovies

I meant no offence. I like Wahlberg, I was just joking around. That songs popularity is why I still think of Wahlberg as Marky Mark sometimes.

      • SariSumdac

Respect? oh calm down he is a ricj movie star i don’t think yer gonna hurt his feelings.

Sadly this is not a fresh approach to the series..which would have been nice after 3 films….but ok. this is it. I guess.

I still think this movie should be called Trans4mers……..
Mark Whalberg, you still have the rest of your career ahead of you. Don’t do this.

    • Clay

On the contrary, no one’s career ever suffered from being in a Bay TF movie. And that’s the problem.

  • Nate

Another shitty Transformers movie. Oh well, I’ll see you guys there on opening night…

    • L.

  • Lizard King

Maybe Michael Bay should direct The Last Airbender sequel. That seems to be a good way to destroy the careers of high profile, crappy directors.

Why couldn’t they have let someone else have a turn after 3 movies??? It would be nice to see someone else’s vision for the characters and story.

    • JohnnyD

HAHA as a fan of “The Amazing Spiderman” I have to say I wish more people had your opinion

  • Chase

Best fucking news I’ve ever seen!

  • terry

I live in Miami and I was around when those guys did the murders. They were heinous to say the least. One of their victims was a 33 year old European business man and his young girlfriend.
He drove a canary yellow lambo. The guys kidnaped him and his girl, got their money and left their chopped up bodies in a 50 gallon oil drug on the side of the turnpike.

  • Nomis1700

So mister long penis gets in TF4 :P But I expect no improvements on MBay.

  • Anonymous

Spielberg, please, make it stop, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

eh, oh well, the bay fan boys got another one, shame, would have been good to see someone else have a shot. Well, iv been fooled 2 times now (1st one was just about decent enough) no way am i seeing this one, i think we know what we are in for at this stage, with or without Mark Wahlberg, he wont improve upon Bays crap style. Wasted opportunity, this is one franchise that needs rebooting!

    86 FOREVER!!!!

  • Dave

Nice choice for the lead role…But Bay is a shitty director who cares only about money.

  • JIM

  • GunsOfNavarone

I hope Wahlberg brings his A game and not his B game. The guy is one of the most inconsistent actors I can think of. When he’s good, he’s good (i.e. Shooter), but when he’s bad, he’s effing atrocious (The Other Guys springs to mind).

In Bay’s movies, actors do not need to talk. Just to run , and run, and then to run. Who will be able to hear them anyway with all the explosions blowing everywhere.

thus, I think that Mark Whalberg will fit the job. A wooden actor for a wooden director. the perfect match.

  • Jamesy

Hmm interesting, wonder if they’ll go with the action hero bad ass Wahlberg, or the “Academy award nonimee” Wahlberg marketing wise. Seems like Bay could either make it the same as the previous Transformers movies (oh we don’t have a plot but here’s some fast cars, explosions, hot girls and shiny things to distract you from that fact) orrrr he could go with more of a character driven movie where I think Wahlberg would be pretty good, although it’s Bay so him and characters, fully rounded or not don’t exist in the same world. Oh well we can only hope!

For fuck sakes why wont these robots just die.

  • Carlos

Bumblebee, all the other Transformers can talk but you can’t. What’s up with that? Oh well, say hi to your mother for me, all right?

  • Boohoohootron

it’ horrible to live in a free country: the government is forcing you all to see movies. otherwise, why complaining so much about something that means so little in your lives?
for the rest of us, logo versions:

    • ScaredForMovies

You’re on a movie website. People talk and complain about movies. Good or bad. That’s what living in a free country is all about. Believe it or not movies do play an important part in some peoples lives. It’s called escapism.

      • Boohoohootron

Complaining is an overrated enterprise for any one-lifetime-only human being. You don’t approve a new TF movie? Don’t go to a TF4 screening, avoid reading news about it, and meanwhile go searching the DVDs for ”The Station Agent”, “Six-String Samurai”, ”Brooklyn’s Finest”, “The Sunshine Boys”, “Brick”, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and another gazillion good studio-made & indie films, old and new. Go watch “Save the Date” on VOD, tonight. Three years from now, after seeing 1000 English-language movies, go watch some fabulous foreign flicks. You’ll never have time to think about Megatron again.

[Michael Bay's life is cool. On a daily basis. What did you do on Tuesday? His agenda: 17:45 Spielberg trashing concept art portfolio proposal.]

        …and look for Haneke’s “Amour”, a.s.a.p.

      • ScaredForMovies

Don’t get you panties in a bunch. This is a movie website. If you don’t expect complaints you might need to stop visiting movie websites. 1+1=2. Is it not ironic that you yourself are here complaining about people who complain about movies? Take your own advice. Some people have affection for this franchise and are free to express their opinion of Michael Bays version. Take it with a grain of salt. If everyone on here was gushing over how amazing every movie ever made was, Collider’s message board would be a pretty boring place. Differing opinions make for good entertainment. Even with his “super cool” life, Michael Bay complains from time to time . And just so you know my Tuesday was the epitome of cool. What about yours?

Once this second trilogy is done (if it ever makes it to 5th film), Hasbro should look at finding another producer and director for a reboot. Not Don Murphy. This guy is horrible.

Get Kevin Feige from Marvel Studios or lure him away. Or let Disney take over the movies. Just don’t let them take over Hasbro :)
