Actor Martin Freeman (BBC’s Sherlock) is rumored to be the top choice to play Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Hobbit.  Speaking to Empire, Freeman confirms that he was offered the role but had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts with Sherlock.  However, as we’ve previously reported, all sides are trying to make the schedule work, and Freeman adds, “if something could be worked out, that would be great.”  It’s clear that Freeman still wants the role and he could still potentially get it since The Hobbit still doesn’t have a greenlight.

Freeman also says he thinks he would be good for the part rather than a younger actor (Freeman is 39) since Bilbo isn’t a kid in the book.  “Absolutely, because Bilbo isn’t 20 at this stage of the story,” he said, “and I reckon I could do a young Ian Holm. I think I could give that a go.”  Hopefully, he’ll get his chance since I think Freeman would make an excellent Bilbo.
