Disney Sets Another Untitled Marvel Film for Release in 2016; CINDERELLA Opens March 13, 2015

Just over a week ago, Disney announced release dates for two untitled Marvel films in 2016 and 2017.  Now, in keeping with what looks to be a firm “two films a year” strategy, Disney has dated yet another untitled Marvel picture for 2016.  The new film will hit theaters on July 8, 2016, which is just a couple of months after the other untitled Marvel film opens on May 6, 2016.  This is in keeping with Marvel’s new strategy of releasing two films a year, though it breaks the pattern a bit as all of the other pics are separated by a larger release gap (eg. Iron Man 3 in May, Thor: The Dark World in November).  The identities of at least some of these “untitled” films will likely be announced at Comic-Con next month.

Additionally, Disney has set director Kenneth Branagh’s new take on Cinderella for release on March 13, 2015, where it currently has the weekend all to itself.  The film stars Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Helena Bonham Carter, Sophie McShera, and Holliday Granger. Hit the jump for more news concerning Marvel’s upcoming slate.

Now that we have three firm “untitled” Marvel Phase Three films set for release, it’s clear that the studio is moving full-speed ahead on its post-The Avengers 2 slate. Again, we should expect to see at least a few of these titles revealed at Comic-Con next month, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2017 film is confirmed to be The Avengers 3.  Whatever films are announced, we here at Collider will be in Hall H to bring you a recap of the studio’s panel as soon as it’s over.  Check out a bit of a refresher on the studio’s upcoming schedule below.

Doctor Strange, Thor 3, and Captain America 3. Then hopefully Black Panther also in 2017. Then Avengers 3 in 2018. Or if they switch Captain America 3′s spot with were I have BP I’ll be fine with that as well.

I’m actually hoping we don’t get a Cap 3 or Thor 3 (at least not for awhile). I think it would be cool if Avengers 3 was the last hurrah for the “original” team. Here’s my wishful thinking:

-Avengers 2 ends with the group victorious but disbanded, thus setting up new heroes for Phase 3 (Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, Black Panther).

-By the time Avengers 3 rolls around, audiences will have “missed” seeing Cap, Thor and especially Iron Man. From a business perspective, this would be a great selling point as a “Return and Farewell” to these characters, all while establishing the new team.

-I think recasting Cap, Thor or Iron Man would be a mistake. I’d imagine these actors would be open to returning as cameos or one-off’s in future “Phases”if they weren’t locked in for sequels (Although I’m sure Downey would still play hardball). I’d be much more interested to see a “veteran” Captain America(Chris Evans) pop up 10 years down the line as Marvel continues to expand their universe.

CA:The Winter Solider plays as Avengers 1.5… the next Cap movie (3rd installment) will likely introduce new characters to the Avengers. I’m thinking the Avengers will lose trust in S.H.E.I.L.D’s motives and set up WC Avengers that will incorporate all the new characters Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and hopefully the likes of Mockingbird & Moonknight.

    Everyone wants that Black Panther.

I don’t know Adam… if the 2017 does turn out to be Avengers 3, then I’d say we have another film yet to be scheduled in between that and the July 2016.

Because it’d be weird if there were only 3 films standing between Avengers 2 and 3, and two of them were Ant-Man and Dr. Strange.

    Avengers 2 & 3 shoot back to back…

  • Kevin

One of the 2016 films is going to be Avenger 3 because Marvel is going to film Avenger 2 and 3 simultaneously.

  • Dan

Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and ether Luke Cage or Nova.

There is a rumor that they are shooting Avengers 2 and 3 back to back but i think someone miss read that down the line. Im sure that they are gunna bump Ant Man again and the November slot will be for Avengers 2 part 2 as Part one will open up in May. atleast this is my wish. The movie will have too many characters and not enough time so i really hope this is the case.
