Marvel’s comic-book film franchise kicks into high gear this year with the release of Thor on May 6th and Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22nd. All this is a lead up, however, to what fans have eagerly been waiting for: The Avengers. The Joss Whedon-directed flick, which hits theaters on May 20th, 2012,  starts filming soon and stars all the major Marvel characters of films past (and some new): Robert Downey Jr. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johannsen, Samuel L. Jackson and recent addition Cobie Smulders.

The plot of the film is tightly under wraps, but it appears that Marvel may have shot a secret teaser trailer for the film recently to attached to either Thor or Captain America this summer. Not only that, but the trailer reveals who the villain of the film may be. Hit the jump to find out. Beware, spoilers lurk below.

Again, possible spoilers regarding the villain of The Avengers are revealed below. Last chance to turn back…

Okay, still with me? AICN is reporting that Marvel recently shot a teaser trailer with Loki, Thor’s brother (played by Tom Hiddleston in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor). Now, you may remember that back in Steve’s video blog for his Thor set visit, he mentioned that the ending of that film hinted at setting Loki up as the villain for The Avengers. It looks like this all may turn out to be true.

In addition to Loki, Latino Review is reporting that Thor’s archenemy will get a hold of the cosmic cube seen in Hugo Weaving’s hand in the Captain America trailer in order to summon the Skrulls to help him take over Earth.

skrulls_the_avengersThis Skrulls rumor has been around since December. The creatures are an extraterrestrial humanoid race and will presumably be very scary (Green! Reptilian! Pointy ears!).

Personally, I think Marvel going all “alien” is pretty damn cool. Especially with Joss Whedon at the helm. Will audiences buy into such a sci-fi comic book movie? We’ll find out for sure when Thor hits theaters in May and audiences get their first taste of an other-worldly comic book flick. Until then, what do you think about The Avengers battling Loki and The Skrulls? Worthy adversaries? Would you have rather them battle Hulk?

      No. You are wrong.

      • Dane

I THINK SO, OR THEY COULD FIGHT THE HULK. SKRULL IS TOO FAR-FETCHED TO MAKE A MOVIE ON TOO MANY PEOPLE TO INTRODUCE. LIKE MAR VELL, THEN BINARY, THEN THEY GOTTA SPEAK ON ROUGE TAKING HER POWERS. SO THAT’S TOO MUCH

  • Sam

Can they even do the Skrulls? When I think Skrulls I instantly think Fantastic 4, and their owned by Fox still. Could they even do Super-Skrull, the poster boy of their race? His powers are FROM the F4′s powers…

    • Dean

Oddly, Fox own the rights to Super Skrull but not the Skrulls themselves so Marvel could easily use them.

excited to see both Thor and Cap A. later this year.
Whoever or Whatever villain they pick.. I just hope it will turn out to be a fantastic film in the end. Nuff said.

Never been a big fan of the Skrull-storylines…

What’s most interesting about the idea of Skrulls being the villains is how it would affect Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk sequels. Especially Iron Man. Once a technologically advanced alien race is introduced into the Iron Man film universe…it’d be hard not to have that affect future storylines.

    • B-Flash

I agree with you to a point I mean they already have a god in the mix, that alone affects future storylines. Plus if they go the ulitmate way which they pretty much are in some points, there’s gonna be a lot of denial….you know Thor’s not really a god but a bum with a mental problem and aliens dont exist.

On the other hand this could be a plus for the mandarin and his rings.

      • Muthasucka

Well, it was revealed in the Ultimate Thor miniseries that… SPOILERS

Thor is a Norse god but that Asgard was destroyed and Loki locked in the room with no doors. Thor was later reborn as a mortal (and Balder reborn as Donald Blake!) and was chosen to wield the armor and hammer of Norway’s supersoldier program, codenamed THOR.

Loki is later freed from his prison, but he is still a god. So when he starts disrupting things in Ultimates 2, the only lie he makes up about Thor is that he’s a mental patient who stole the weapons – he really is just a guy with a super suit.

Although that doesn’t explain how Thor got free at the end. Maybe he got his powers back? Isn’t he using the original Mjolnir again?

In The end it was the chitauri

Also, when you think of the end of Cap,
Red Skull didnt die, he held the Tesseract with bare Hands, and the tesseract was unstable, an transfered him to another place.
