Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton will need to flee from the warmest place to hide (hint: it’s Man) as they’ve been cast to lead Matthijs Van Heijningen’s remake of/prequel to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 horror film, The ThingHeat Vision reports that Winstead, “will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.”  I believe I speak for everyone who has seen Carpenter’s film when I say, “Good luck with that.”

Hit the jump for a brief history of The Thing along with some more details on the project.

What makes the 1982 film (which was a remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks film The Thing from Another World, which in turn was based off the 1938 short story, “Who Goes There?”) such a horrific ride is not only could the organism reside in anyone, but when it’s discovered it bursts out in an unexpected-yet-reliably-horrific fashion.  The new film, which is scheduled to begin shooting on March 15th, is a remake but is inspired by the events at the beginning of the 1982 version where remaining members of the Norweigan team are trying desperately to kill a runaway dog that has been infected with the organism.  The screenplay for the new film was written by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, 2003) and Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street, 2010).  Hopefully, Van Heijningen, who is making his feature film directing debut after cutting his teeth on music videos and commercials, will be able to infect his remake/prequel with as much terror as Carpenter’s 1982 version.

While I could end this article with a nasty little image from the 1982 Thing, here’s a picture of Mary Elizabeth Winstead being hot, which we can all agree is a far more pleasant visual:

Supposed to be a prequel and not a remake in any way. Just depicting the events before the 1982 film. While I have nothing against this girl, nor putting hot chicks in movies. It doesnt seem likely that a remote isolated antarctic research lab for studying god knows what, would house a serious hottie like her. First of all, the camp was all men. Second, if a girl like her were to be put intoa building with 12 dudes who have been in a frozen tundra for 6months to a year…. I think you can figure the rest out. Third, girls this hot dont have jobs like that. they get paid to be beautiful. maybe If this character was portrayed by some beastly chick it would be more appropriate, not to mention original. Fourth…EVERYONE DIES. and they never found the body of a hot chick, so….ugh this is just a bad idea. the whole thing will be a bad idea and this is the first mistake. thinking they need to cast a hot doctor whos too young to even have a degree in the first place, who would willingly live in antarctica when she could be getting paid to look beautiful in on tropical beaches. Im expecting a by-the-book horror cliche where the girl becomes the tough survivor again… and is filled with cheap scares like that horror cell phone movie, rather than genuine tension. oh yea, and a shit ton of terrible fake looking CGI. no CGI advancement argument could ever stack against what was created with the 1982 film. that film holds up so well….

we all know how it ends for them. rather pathetically too, guy blowing himself up in a helecopter and another dude shot dead, while everyone else was killed off in similar fashion, one guy bleeding out from slitting his wrists excluded. where a hot girl fits into this i have no idea…. i'll still see it, but im expecting nothing more than a peice of shit.

There was also a sequel to the 1982 movie called simply The Thing its set after the events of the movie, was pretty decent too much better than any general game linked to a movie.
